The Sip of Success: The Isla Verde Turmeric and Salabat Success Story
Who could have thought that one can make a living out a seemingly common crop that looks like ginger but more potent in health benefits? The turmeric is the new “IN.” People now a days are going loco for turmeric! A relative of ginger, the rhizomes of turmeric is packed with curcumin compounds that is known to be antioxidant and anti-inflammatory. It is usually being enjoyed as a hot beverage.
Mrs. Myrna Solomon started her turmeric business after she took over her daughter’s business last 2014, the Isla Verde Turmeric and Salabat. Her initial production started with just 2 kilos of sugar, and the basket of turmeric rhizomes that the children in her barangay have harvested. Her initial 10 packs of 200 grams turmeric powder were sold with lukewarm response from the market but she did not give up.
Fast forward to 2017, Mrs. Solomon was able to join the Kapatid Mentor ME (KMME) Program of DTI where she learned how to better manage her business and market her product. These include having appropriate packaging and attractive labels. She was also able to add new product, the sweetened salabat powder.
Thanks to the KMME Program of DTI, people then took notice of her products. She was able to display her goods in notable establishments in the municipalities of Kalamansig and Lebak. In the year 2018, Mrs. Solomon’s production of turmeric and salabat have increased by about 100%. And by February 2019, she was able to sold approximately 1,588 packs or about 782% increase in production. From her small profit of 700 pesos when she started, she was able to have an income of P25,400 in one month of selling the products. She was also able to acquire a motorcycle with sidecar on an installment basis that she now use to deliver her products.
Asked about her success secret, Mrs. Solomon’s reply is short and simple “Believe in your product, learn to ask help and have faith.”
