Generic vs. Branded medications: Are you throwing money away?
"Doc, ang mahal po pala nung reseta. Pwede bang inumin ko na lang tuwing makalawa?" As a clinician, it's very disappointing to hear this and pitiful. We prescribe medications to save lives and prevent complications, but the reality is, the financial burden of maintenance meds can be overwhelming. This is where the debate between generic and branded medicines comes in. Are you throwing away your hard-earned money just for a brand name?
Letโs look at the science and local data. Ayon sa Department of Health (DOH), generic and branded medicines have the exact same active ingredients, dosage strength, and therapeutic effect. The only differences are the inactive ingredients (like color or shape) and the packaging. This means the Philippine Food and Drug Administration (FDA) strictly ensures that the generic version is absorbed by your body at the exact same rate and quality as the expensive branded counterpart.
Now, letโs talk about the financial sideโdahil as a clinician investor, I want to see your wealth grow alongside your health. Government data on the Philippine healthcare landscape shows that generic medicines are often 55% to 80% cheaper than their branded counterparts. Imagine this: if a branded maintenance medicine for your blood pressure costs โฑ30 a day, thatโs almost โฑ11,000 a year. If a high-quality generic equivalent costs only โฑ5, you spend less than โฑ2,000 annually. That is a massive โฑ
The real danger isn't in taking generic medicines; the real danger is stopping your treatment because you can't afford it. The DOH emphasizes that affordable generic medicines help patients actually complete their prescribed treatments, which is critical in preventing anti-microbial resistance for antibiotics and preventing strokes or heart attacks for hypertension. Kapag tinipid mo ang gamot dahil pinilit mo yung mahal na brand, you are risking catastrophic hospital bills down the line. Preventive health is the ultimate investment.
So, the next time you go to the pharmacy or ask your doctor for a prescription, huwag mahiya to ask for a generic option. It is not "lesser quality"; it is a smart, scientifically backed, and financially sound decision. Letโs break the stigma that expensive always means better. Health is wealth, but you don't need to go bankrupt just to stay healthy.
"While I have a lot of respect for the pharmaceutical industry, my ethical obligation to my patients always comes first. It is a constant moral struggle to prescribe branded medications when I know that financial constraints might prevent a patient from sustaining their long-term treatment. My priority is ensuring my patients get the care they need in a way they can actually afford.
On a related note, I proudly fund all of my own professional travels, accommodations, and fares. I have consistently and respectfully declined industry sponsorships to ensure absolute objectivity in my practice, to the point that I no longer receive these offersโwhich is exactly how I prefer it. I take great pride in maintaining my independence and covering my own expenses." PADAYON!
