VRSP’s Way of Serving the People! 👁️💙

In celebration of the Sight Saving Month, the VRSP Mulat Mata Diabetic Retinopathy Screening Program found its way to Magallanes, Cavite last August 29, 2026—despite the heavy rains and floods brought by the Habagat.

A heartfelt thank you to Dr. Darby Santiago and Dr. Jubaida Mangondato for spearheading this meaningful activity, and to all our volunteers who showed up and served with such dedication— Dr Anton Javellana , Dr Junn Pajarillo , and Dr Miko Pascual, our Retina fellows from PGH and East Avenue, together with our partners and volunteers from MTC, Medilight, and Hollywood, came ready to serve.

And despite the weather, the patients came, too.

We were able to screen 53 patients with diabetes:
👁️ 16 had diabetic retinopathy
🚨 7 needed urgent treatment
👓 7 had operable cataracts
🔍 1 was identified with glaucoma

What makes this even more meaningful is that for many of them, this was their first-ever eye screening—despite having lived with diabetes for 12 to 15 years.

Our heartfelt gratitude as well to the UP Manila Community Health Development Program, through Dr. Anthony Cordero, for welcoming us and for their commitment to improving the eye health of their communities.

We are looking forward to more collaborations in Naic, Ternate, and Maragondon—the MagNaMarTe area—with an inspiring vision: to develop and train their local health units in diabetic retinopathy screening, so that eventually, they can do it on their own.

And perhaps this is where the real challenge—and opportunity—lies.

It is our hope that the VRSP, through the Mulat Mata Program, can rise to this challenge: not simply to screen patients, but to build capacity, empower communities, and create a sustainable system of eye care that continues even when we are no longer there.

Because serving the people is not just about bringing care to the communities.

It is about helping communities learn to care for their own.

This is the VRSP’s way of serving the people.

*AUGUST SIGHT SAVING MONTH 2026 BULLETIN*

Keeping an Eye on Your Health 👁️💙

As part of Sight Saving Month, the Vitreoretinal Society of the Philippines (VRSP), together with the PAO-NWL Chapter and Baguio-Benguet Medical Society, conducted a Multa Mata Diabetic Retinopathy Screening Program in La Trinidad, Benguet last August 21, 2026, under the theme “Keep an Eye on Your Health.”

The program was spearheaded by Dr. Christine Marcelo-Tan and Dr. Darby Santiago, with the invaluable collaboration and support of Baguio General Hospital and Medical Center, the Rural Health Unit of La Trinidad, Benguet, Baguio Sunflower Lions’ Club, Baguio Everlasting Lions’ Club, and our generous industry partners Medilight, Alcon, Synergen, iSenz, and Vista Pharma.

Through this collaborative initiative, 130 patients with diabetes were screened for diabetic retinopathy. Among those screened, 19 patients were found to have diabetic retinopathy, ranging from mild non-proliferative diabetic retinopathy (NPDR) to proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR), highlighting the importance of screening even before significant visual symptoms develop.

The activity carries a simple yet powerful message: *protecting vision begins with awareness, screening, and early intervention.*

We are deeply grateful to all our collaborators, partners, volunteers, healthcare professionals, and the local community whose collective efforts made this outreach possible. Through initiatives like Multa Mata, we bring eye care closer to those who need it and help detect diabetic eye disease early—because every early diagnosis is an opportunity to prevent avoidable vision loss.

Together, let us continue to keep more eyes seeing, more lives empowered, and more communities aware. 👁️✨

Empowering Primary Care Through Practical, Case-Based Learning!

The VRSP, through its Mulat Mata Diabetic Retinopathy Project, is proud to be part of Abbott Laboratories’ Adult Care Trends (ACT) program—an initiative focused on strengthening primary care through practical, case-based learning.

Held on August 15, 2026, at Makati Diamond Residences, the program brought together healthcare professionals and expert faculty to discuss relevant adult-care trends and practical approaches to patient management.

We are grateful to our Mulat Mata workshop facilitators—*Dr. Darby Santiago, Dr. Jazel Eleazar-Verde, Dr. Charlene Tablante, Dr. Kim Lorenzo, Dr. Gab Salas, Dr. Katrina Manas, and Dr. Giselle Dy*—for sharing their expertise and helping advance collaborative, multidisciplinary care.

Through partnerships like this, we continue to promote early detection, better coordination, and timely management of diabetic eye disease—bringing us one step closer to preventing avoidable vision loss.

Hello, Baguio! 👀💙

Rain or shine, the advocacy continues! ☔️💙

The Vitreo-Retina Society of the Philippines (VRSP), in partnership with the Institute for Studies on Diabetes Foundation, Inc. (ISDFI) and Abbott, successfully held the Baguio City leg of the Cardiometabolic Risk Recognition and Early Detection Program last August 6, 2026.

Despite the rainy weather that welcomed us to the City of Pines, our Baguio colleagues warmly opened their doors and hearts to support this important advocacy. 🌧️💙

Part of the VRSP Mulat Mata Project under its Diabetic Retinopathy Awareness Program, this nationwide initiative aims to strengthen collaboration between diabetologists and retina specialists, promote the early detection of diabetic retinopathy, encourage timely referral, and ultimately help prevent avoidable vision loss among Filipinos living with diabetes.

A very special thank you to Dr. Ramil Lising and to our wonderful Baguio VRSP members — Dr. Christine Marcelo-Tan, Dr. Ronald Gonin Paraan, and Dr. Angelique Ang — for generously sharing their expertise, time, and passion for the cause.
