Yesterday, I had the privilege of facilitating a Reiki session for Daylen Cosette, a Canadian military veteran who has recently moved to the Philippines.

As we were talking, I had to ask what made him choose the Philippines for retirement and he said, “It’s the people. I have been to over 22 countries and it’s only here that you see people smile.”

Thank you, Daylen, for reminding me how perspective can change the way we live.

Today, I realized that the greatest freedom our nation possesses is the freedom to love, welcome, and share our joy so openly with the world. A smile is a reflection of a free and generous heart; one that isn't guarded, but open.

On a deeper level, true independence begins within. Just as our nation fought for its liberty, we too must choose our own personal freedom: the freedom to let go of past burdens, to live authentically, and to let our own inner light shine.

This Independence Day, may we all find the peace and freedom to smile from the heart, unconditionally.
