Ended September outside the clinic. 🌱

We spent the morning with the PENRO Bukidnon team talking about sleep, movement, nutrition, social connection, substance use, stress, burnout and the small, practical things we can do to take better care of ourselves.

We hope conversations like these can become part of everyday life.... helping reduce stigma, making it easier to talk about our struggles, and normalizing seeking help when we need it.

This is part of what we hope to continue building at One Day at a Time Wellness Studio—making practical, evidence-based wellness conversations part of everyday life.

Thank you, PENRO Bukidnon, for spending the morning with us. ☺️🌱

Burnout prevention isn’t only about teaching people to be more resilient. Sometimes, we also need to look at the environment they’re being resilient in. 🌱

In fact, the CDC/NIOSH emphasizes that addressing workplace policies and practices is one of the most important ways to reduce burnout and support worker well-being, including creating supportive working conditions, reducing excessive demands, and giving people greater flexibility and control.

Healthy workplaces give people room to feel respected, supported, trusted, and able to grow.

Wellness is not only an individual responsibility. It’s something workplaces help create, too.

People thrive where they are allowed to grow. ☺️

🚭 Smoking affects more than just the lungs.

To***co use remains an important preventable health risk. It contributes to cardiovascular disease, cancer, and chronic respiratory disease. And the effects are not limited to the person who smokes. Secondhand smoke also affects the health of the people around us.

The Philippines has made progress in to***co control through smoke-free policies, taxation, health education, and other measures. But another important part of the solution is helping people who smoke find support when they are ready to quit.

Quitting may not always happen in one attempt. What matters is continuing to work toward change.

🌱 Start small. Know your triggers. Ask for support. Try again when needed. 🤍

High blood pressure and diabetes can quietly affect your health for years before you notice symptoms.

🇵🇭 In the Philippines, 13% of adults aged 20–59 had elevated blood pressure in the 2023 National Nutrition Survey. Among Filipinos aged 60 and above, the figure was 33.5%.

For diabetes, an estimated 4.7 million Filipino adults aged 20–79 were living with the condition in 2024, and more than half (53.5%) were estimated to be undiagnosed.

The challenge? You can feel perfectly well and still have high blood pressure or high blood sugar.

That’s why prevention starts with simple things: know your BP, check your blood sugar when appropriate, stay physically active, eat a balanced diet, maintain a healthy weight, avoid smoking, and have regular health checkups.

Don’t wait for symptoms before taking care of your health.

Small choices today can protect your heart, kidneys, brain, and overall wellness tomorrow. 🌱

Teaching doesn’t only happen in classrooms, and care doesn’t only happen inside the clinic. 🌱

Spent two meaningful days learning and sharing with Batch 1 of the clinical and non-clinical staff of First Misamis Oriental General Hospital in Medina, Misamis Oriental, together with our psychologist, Ms. Eden Relente-Perez, RPsy.

We talked about the science of stress, recognizing burnout, building resilience through everyday lifestyle habits, practical coping and mindfulness, and looking at wellness through the biological, psychological, social, and spiritual dimensions.

More than the lectures, I enjoyed the conversations, activities, shared experiences, and of course, the laughs in between. 😊

Thank you, FMOGH, for welcoming us and for being so engaged throughout the two days.

See you Batch 2, this October! 🌿

Think about how we spend our small empty moments.

Waiting for our food. Sitting in traffic. Standing in line. Waiting for someone to arrive.

Before smartphones, these were moments when we simply… waited.

Today, we scroll.

But neuroscience is giving us a different way of looking at boredom.

Boredom is not simply “having nothing to do.” It is a signal from the brain that we are not meaningfully engaged. That uncomfortable feeling pushes us to look for something else—to explore, think, create, or find something that feels more worthwhile.

And when we don’t immediately fill that space with stimulation, our minds have an opportunity to wander. Research on spontaneous thought and creativity suggests that internally directed thinking can involve brain networks important for imagination, memory, and generating ideas.

Interestingly, constantly escaping boredom through our phones may not always work. Research has found that rapidly switching between online videos can actually leave people more bored, not less.

So perhaps we don’t have to eliminate every boring moment.

Wait without scrolling sometimes.
Take a walk without entertainment.
Sit quietly. Let your thoughts wander.

Boredom itself isn’t creativity. But sometimes, giving the mind nothing to consume gives it space to create. 🤍

Can making sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs) more expensive actually make us healthier?

It can help...but taxation alone is not the answer.

Everyday choices are influenced by the environment around us. Price, availability, convenience, habits, and even what we regularly see and are exposed to can influence what we consume.

But if we really want healthier Filipinos, we shouldn’t focus only on making unhealthy choices more expensive. We also need to make healthier choices easier, accessible, and affordable, right? 😉
Clean drinking water, nutritious food, clear food labels, health education, opportunities for physical activity, and healthier options in our schools and workplaces.

We often tell people to “make healthier choices.” But that becomes much harder when the healthier option is more expensive, less accessible, or simply less convenient.

Perhaps this is the bigger challenge for our leaders and policymakers:

“How do we make the healthier choice the easier choice for every Filipino?”

WELLNESS IS ALSO WHO WE CONNECT WITH. 🌿

We often think of health as eating well, exercising, sleeping enough, and managing stress.

But there’s another part we sometimes forget:

Social connection.

Having people we can talk to, laugh with, spend time with, and rely on is good for our health.

The World Health Organization recognizes social connection as an important part of health and well-being.

And connection doesn’t mean having hundreds of friends.

A few healthy, genuine relationships can matter.

So make time for people.
Check on a friend.
Join a community.
Have conversations beyond the screen.
Be someone others feel safe around.

And perhaps, sometimes, wellness also means asking ourselves:

“Am I building connection—or constantly pushing people away?”

Taking care of your relationships is also taking care of your health. 😉
