Extracorporeal Shock Wave Lithotripsy (ESWL)
- Patient had ureter stone presenting with flank discomfort and blood in urine.

We hope for stone-free result ๐Ÿ˜Š

- a process that uses acoustic or high intensity sound waves (called shock waves) to break stones in the kidney, ureter and urinary bladder. It is used for removing kidney stones without surgery
- Contrast dye was injected to visualize the urine flow.
- After the procedure, tiny pieces of stone pass out of body in urine or through other natural passages.

Note: NOT FOR GALLBLADDER STONE ๐Ÿ˜Š

How ESWL (Extracorporeal Shockwave Lithotripsy) works?

- It uses high-energy shock (pressure) waves to break up stones.
- These waves are aimed at kidney stones to break them into smaller pieces by using robust and focused energy waves to shatter the stones.
- Tiny pieces of the stones can then move through your urinary tract and out of your body more easily.
- Kidney stones are rock-like masses that form when you have high levels of certain substances in your urine.

KIDNEY/URETER STENT INSERTION
- is a thin, flexible tube placed in the ureter to bypass blockages, ensure urine flows from the kidney to the bladder, and aid healing after surgery.
- Typically measuring 10 to 15 inches with curled ends, it is temporarily inserted under anesthesia.

An elderly female patient suddenly experienced flank pain and elevated creatinine. CT scan showed ureter stone blocking the urine flow.

Why It's Used
- Treat Blockages: Relieve obstructions caused by kidney stones, tumors, swelling, or blood clots.
- Aid Healing: Keep the ureter open and facilitate drainage following surgeries, such as laser lithotripsy.
- Protect the Kidney: Prevent swelling or infections caused by blocked urinary tracts

Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy for KIDNEY STONES - Staghorn Calculi

- 28 year old male patient with left Kidney stone (large kidney stones presented with left back pain and blood in urine.

- a procedure used to remove kidney stones from the body when they can't pass on their own.
- a scope is inserted through a small incision in your back to remove the kidney stones

- Percutaneous: This refers to the procedure being performed through the skin.
- Nephrolithotomy: This means removing stones from the kidney.
- How it works: A small incision is made in the back, and a tube is inserted into the kidney. Special instruments are passed through the tube to locate, break up (if necessary), and remove the stones.
- When it's used: PCNL is typically used for larger or more complex kidney stones that are not easily removed by other methods like shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL) or ureteroscopy.
- Recovery: PCNL is generally considered a minimally invasive procedure, and recovery time is relatively short compared to open surgery.
