Dressing Selection Workshop for Nurses: Focus on Diabetic Foot

"Bedsore is predictable for me — for me only, hah!!

But diabetic foot is quite impossible to predict in terms of its behavior, since bones and ligaments will always play their role in ensuring its destruction becomes known.

BUT

If we are equipped with knowledge from different case presentations, I think we can minimize becoming part of the amputation statistics.

THE ENDLESS CYCLE of HAND WASHING

Para sa mga kabarong HEALTHCARE WORKER AT F & B workers

Walang tigil ang cycle na ito: maghuhugas ka, mawawala ang natural oils ng balat, nasisira ang lipid matrix, tapos maghuhugas ka na naman bago pa magkaroon ng chance mag-repair ang skin mo. Para sa healthcare professionals (30+ hand washes per shift) at sa mga food & beverage workers (laging may sanitation protocols).

Yung mga unang symptoms—paninikip ng balat, flaking, pamumula—mga warning signs na yan. Kapag hinayaan, lalong pumapasok ang mga irritants dahil compromised na ang skin barrier, nagti-trigger ng chronic inflammation, masakit na cracking (na nagpapataas ng risk ng infection para sa worker at sa patient o customer), at kalaunan, mga kondisyon tulad ng protein contact dermatitis o chronic irritant contact eczema.

Karamihan sa mga hand cream ay hindi gumagana para sa ganitong klaseng workforce dahil:

· Nasa ibabaw lang ng balat (masyadong greasy), kaya natatanggal agad sa next hand wash.
· Sumasakit sa balat na sira na dahil sa pabango o alcohol.
· Hindi tinutugunan ang unique na "wash-dry-re-wash" cycle.

This is a very interesting case showcasing the strength and collaborative partnership of the MD and RN—most especially the RN—in identifying and reading wound bed tissue in relation to nutrition when managing pressure injuries.
