RETENTION AFTER BRACES (ORTHODONTIC TREATMENT)
After braces (orthodontic treatment), there are two common types of removable retainers:
1. Hawley Retainer
Advantages
* ✅ Very durable and can last for many years with proper care.
* ✅ Can be adjusted by your orthodontist if minor tooth movement occurs.
* ✅ Easier to repair if damaged.
* ✅ Allows your upper and lower teeth to bite together naturally.
Disadvantages
* ❌ More visible because of the metal wire.
* ❌ May affect speech for the first few days.
* ❌ Slightly bulkier than clear retainers.
2. Clear Retainer
Advantages
* ✅ Nearly invisible.
* ✅ Comfortable and thin.
* ✅ Fits snugly around the teeth, helping maintain alignment very well.
* ✅ Less noticeable when talking or smiling.
Disadvantages
* ❌ Can crack or wear out over time.
* ❌ Cannot be adjusted—if it no longer fits, a new one is usually needed.
* ❌ Can stain or discolor if not cleaned properly.
* ❌ May warp if exposed to hot water or heat.
