🚨 Pediatricians Report Limited Training on Vaccine Injuries in Medical School

A recent report highlights a notable gap in medical education: many physicians say they received little to no formal training on recognizing, reporting, or managing vaccine-related adverse events during medical school and residency.

Instead, curricula emphasize the recommended vaccine schedule, benefits of immunization, and strategies for addressing vaccine hesitancy.

Florida pediatrician Dr. Brian Thornburg recently noted in a video discussion that pediatricians receive “zero training” in identifying vaccine injuries.

While board exams require thorough knowledge of the schedule, questions on potential complications or injuries are largely absent.

Texas pediatrician Dr. Osvaldo Villarreal, who attended medical school from 1999–2003, recalled that vaccine injuries “are not recognized or discussed.” He learned about the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS) years into his practice.

Dr. Paul Thomas, who trained from 1981–1985, described a similar experience: “I had zero training… VAERS was never mentioned.” He only became aware of potential issues after observing them in his own patients.

Dr. Joseph Varon, President and Chief Medical Officer of the Independent Medical Alliance, explained that training addresses common reactions (such as fever or injection-site soreness) to a limited degree, but the primary focus remains on benefits rather than detailed investigation of injuries—particularly delayed or complex cases.

These accounts align with a 2023 survey of medical students and faculty at a major Pennsylvania medical school, published in AJPM Focus:

• 79% of students reported insufficient coverage of vaccine topics

• 80% of faculty agreed the curriculum provided insufficient vaccine education

• Many students called for more instruction on policy, development, testing, and risks

Dr. Larry Palevsky added that medical schools often minimize discussion of injuries, sometimes viewing any emphasis on risks as “controversial.”

This gap has contributed to growing demand for “vaccine-friendly” pediatricians who prioritize informed consent and open dialogue.

Recent surveys indicate that approximately 60% of pregnant women and young mothers are considering delaying or selectively approaching routine vaccinations.

As Dr. Varon emphasized, “The physician’s job is to care for the patient in front of them”—evaluating each case with critical thinking and evidence, rather than defending any specific protocol.

This topic raises important questions about medical training and informed consent…
