𝗜𝗡 𝗣𝗛𝗢𝗧𝗢𝗦: 𝗥𝗜𝗧𝗠-𝗡𝗧𝗥𝗟 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗱𝘀 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗿𝘆 𝗮𝗱𝗼𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗱-𝗳𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗹𝘆 𝗧𝗕 𝗱𝗶𝗮𝗴𝗻𝗼𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰𝘀

The National Tuberculosis (TB) Reference Laboratory (NTRL) of the Research Institute for Tropical Medicine (RITM), with technical assistance from the ASCENT DR-TB Project of the KNCV Plus Tuberculosis Foundation, funded by Unitaid, concluded the interim phase of the country adoption of stool-based low-complexity nucleic acid amplification testing (LC-NAAT) among children with an implementation review held from June 16 to 18, 2026 at the Novotel Suites Manila at Acqua, Mandaluyong City.

The activity marked the culmination of years-long efforts to introduce this child-friendly TB diagnostic method in the Philippines, paving the way for its sustained nationwide programmatic implementation.

The 2025 Yearend Report is now out!

The RITM National TB Reference Laboratory (NTRL), through its Laboratory Network Strengthening Section, has just released the national-level analysis of data for initial TB diagnostics, and follow-on genotypic drug susceptibility tests for 2025. Results highlight significant strides forward in the race to end TB, particularly on laboratory testing and diagnosis, such as:

📈 Broadened coverage for TB diagnostic testing
🧬 Marked shift to better diagnostics for TB
✅ Lab quality remained in check

While these milestones reflect the bolstered TB case finding activities, and continued laboratory strengthening efforts nationwide, challenges were still encountered. Addressing these gaps is crucial in achieving the country’s public health goals.

Please be advised that the Research Institute for Tropical Medicine (RITM) shall temporarily suspend the conduct of Interferon-Gamma Release Assay (IGRA) testing, effective 01 April 2026, until further notice, due to operational concerns.

In line with this,the following guidance is hereby provided:

- RITM shall not be receiving samples for IGRA testing during the period of suspension.
- All samples received prior to the effectivity date of the test suspension shall be processed, and corresponding results shall be released accordingly.
- Referring facilities may coordinate with other accredited laboratories offering the same diagnostic service, as appropriate.

We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this temporary suspension may cause and greatly appreciate your understanding and cooperation.

RITM assures all stakeholders that appropriate measures are being undertaken to facilitate the prompt resumption of services, while maintaining the highest standards of diagnostic quality, reliability, and public health safety.

The Research Institute for Tropical Medicine (RITM) - National Tuberculosis (TB) Reference Laboratory (NTRL), through its Laboratory Network Strengthening Section (LNSS), has concluded its series of TB laboratory assessments for 2025. Twelve (12) intermediate-level facilities under the Department of Health (DOH) - National TB Control Program’s (NTP) laboratory network participated in these activities.

In fulfillment of its mandate to provide technical assistance to the DOH-NTP and its laboratory network, RITM-NTRL assesses the technical and operational performance of TB laboratories. This aims to facilitate the effective and efficient delivery of accurate and reliable TB diagnostic services nationwide.

Dr. Ramon Basilio, RITM-NTRL Department Head, underscored the rationale behind this activity. “𝘉𝘺 𝘮𝘰𝘯𝘪𝘵𝘰𝘳𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘦𝘷𝘢𝘭𝘶𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘮𝘢𝘯𝘤𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘳𝘦𝘧𝘦𝘳𝘳𝘢𝘭 𝘋𝘖𝘏-𝘕𝘛𝘗 𝘭𝘢𝘣𝘰𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘰𝘳𝘪𝘦𝘴 𝘪𝘯 𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘺 𝘳𝘦𝘨𝘪𝘰𝘯, 𝘙𝘐𝘛𝘔-𝘕𝘛𝘙𝘓 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘵𝘳𝘪𝘣𝘶𝘵𝘦𝘴 𝘵𝘰 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘷𝘪𝘴𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘰𝘧 𝘩𝘪𝘨𝘩-𝘲𝘶𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘵𝘺 𝘱𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘤𝘢𝘳𝘦, 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘢𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘤𝘰𝘶𝘯𝘵𝘳𝘺’𝘴 𝘱𝘶𝘣𝘭𝘪𝘤 𝘩𝘦𝘢𝘭𝘵𝘩 𝘨𝘰𝘢𝘭𝘴”, he explained.

Each assessment, carried out by an assigned team, covers key TB laboratory aspects: (1) organization and services, (2) personnel and competence, (3) facilities and safety, (4) equipment and supplies, (5) practices and procedures, and (6) information and quality management. Through staff interviews, physical observations, data reviews, and competence evaluations, the assessment team identifies supporting and hindering factors affecting the laboratory's services and provides recommendations for continuous improvement.

Please be advised that there will be a delay in the release of results for TBC and DST as RITM-NTRL temporarily transitions from the automated liquid to the manual solid-based method due to resource limitations. Specimens received starting January 14 onwards are affected by this delay (see Annex for the list of affected referring health facilities as of January 22, 2026).

Furthermore, please be informed that DST processing for Bedaquiline, Pretomanid, and Linezolid (BPaL) will be temporarily suspended, as this test is exclusively performed using the liquid-based method. RITM-NTRL will continue to accept specimens for BPaL-DST, which will be stored properly and processed once supplies become available.

Rest assured that RITM-NTRL remains committed to upholding the highest standards of quality in TB diagnostic services and is exerting all necessary efforts to mitigate the impact of this delay.
