Forklift Safety
Forklifts are powerful material-handling machines, but improper operation can lead to struck-by incidents, overturns, falling loads, crush injuries and fatalities.
Key Forklift Safety Rules
1. Only trained operators
Operate only if trained, authorised and competent.
Wear the seat belt where provided.
2. Inspect before use
Check brakes, steering, tyres, horn, lights, forks, mast, chains and hydraulic systems.
Report defects and do not use an unsafe forklift.
3. Never overload
Know the forklift’s rated capacity.
Keep the load stable and properly positioned.
4. Drive safely
Keep the load low while travelling.
Maintain a safe speed.
Slow down at intersections, corners and blind spots.
Sound the horn where necessary.
5. Protect pedestrians
Keep pedestrians separated from forklift operating areas where possible.
Give pedestrians the right of way according to site procedures.
Maintain a safe distance.
6. Never carry passengers
Do not allow anyone to ride on the forks or load.
Never use forks as a personnel platform unless the equipment and procedure are specifically designed and authorised for that purpose.
7. Watch overhead hazards
Be alert for overhead structures, doors, pipework and power lines.
Maintain required clearances.
8. Park safely
Lower the forks fully.
Apply the parking brake.
Switch off the forklift and secure it according to site procedures.
🚨 Remember
A forklift is not dangerous simply because it is powerful — unsafe operation makes it dangerous.
