CONTENT TIPS FOR FURNITURE MAKERS & STORES

A piece of furniture is a retail item that first needs to be experienced by the five senses before being purchased.
It needs to physically and aesthetically fit the house it will be in, plus it needs to serve its function for many years.

Furniture is also considered a major expense by most people, therefore it takes some time before a customer
decides to buy one.

Therefore, the way to market furniture online is to make the customer imagine how their life will be better with your products. Take photoshoots of your furniture arranged and styled inside an actual room that’s designed according to your target customer’s dream interiors. Make your photos aspirational, worthy of pinning on Pinterest or on a visual mood board.

If you can add human models using your furniture, the better! A pro tip is not to show the models’ faces in the photos. A person viewing your image will subliminally associate themself with the model‘s gestures, and they will feel as if they’re the one sitting there!

The furniture stores with the best feeds to follow are , , , and Philippine brand .

I was told that in order to grow a dedicated audience on social media, you have to share progress videos of your work.

The truth is, I cringe at the thought of doing this, because #1, I don't consider myself as "THE designer", and #2 there are thousands of artists and designers out there doing the same thing, and they probably have better work than mine.

But still, I continued to record my work sessions in Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop in order to document my progress. I just didn't share them on my socials.

But now, I realize I'm doing a disservice as a creator to not share my journey with you. The behind-the-scenes, the struggle. Truly, one of the reasons why I'm improving in my craft is because these progress videos motivate me. Imagine after 10 years as a corporate designer & marketer, I'm finally creating cute illustrations like this, for people who actually appreciate my work!

This is last year's packaging design project for a client in the US, . This is just one part of an entire home interior illustration that I designed on all sides of the box. Watching this after a year feels cringe-y, yes, but also wonderful.

It's...HUSTLE THURSDAY!! At least that's what I feel every Thursday.

Thursday is when I work my hardest to finish my major projects. Why? Simply because for me, I want to keep my Fridays less stressful. Friday is the prelude to the weekend! If I enter the weekend with my energy drained, I won't be able to push through with my Saturday plans - like do chores, study, attend church events, etc., and Sunday plans - being with my family.

As a freelancer, yes I do get to construct my schedule how I want it. But at the same time, the income of a freelancer is directly proportional to the amount of effort she puts into marketing, studying, and juggling projects. So, slacking off is not an option. Right now, I'm still in the middle of trying to strike my version of a work-life balance. There are still sleepless nights that I can't avoid. But I know someday, with consistent work, I'll meet that goal.

How about you? How's your hustle today?

Hello September!! Amazing how we've all been working from home for more than a year now. So perhaps many of you now have your favorite software programs, apps, websites, or tools that you use every day! Here are some of mine. I use a mix of digital and physical tools.

FREE TOOLS

1. Notion - Ever since I discovered it last 2020, I've been a huge fan of this highly customizable cloud-based app. I think of Notion as my personal website that serves as my second brain. This is where I save all of my ideas, track my projects, check off my tasks, and plan my goals.

2. Notebook - Because I'm a slow typer, my choice of capturing minutes of meetings and ideas is by jotting them down in a notebook. I prefer blank pages to lined ones because I often sketch, but grid pages work well too.

3. Coloring Materials - My collection of Faber-Castell colored pencils is more than a decade old. I also have accumulated a small collection of highlighters and gray markers. I often use these for brainstorming.

4. Buffer - When you just need an app to post content for you, Buffer is one of the easiest to use. It can auto-post even to LinkedIn and Pinterest.

5. Creative Market - When I discovered this website last year, I was blown away by the sheer volume of creative assets there. So far I'm just using a free account, where in they send you 6 creative elements each week to download for free. I'm slowly growing my fonts and textures from this weekly gift from them.

PAID TOOLS

1. Gaming Laptop - For my graphics and basic video editing needs, a Windows gaming laptop does the job. Why a laptop and not a PC? Right now I work in a small shared bedroom, but in time I want to have the freedom to work anywhere.

2. Huion Pen Tablet - I have the simplest Huion Tablet - the HS64. It's not wireless, it's small, but it does the job well.

3. Adobe Creative Suite - Probably my most expensive investment for work (yes, even more expensive than the laptop!). As a designer, Adobe is a necessity. Nuff said.

4. Canva Pro - I also just discovered Canva last year. If you are a non-designer or if you just need some social media templates real quick, Canva is the best app for that. I can whip up a Facebook post in Canva in minutes without worrying about creative blocks.

5. Filmora X - Basic video editing at its finest. You can use Filmora as your practice program for video editing before jumping to Adobe Premiere Pro.

I learned about Viktor Papanek in college when I was taking up Industrial Design. His book, "Design for the Real World" is a required read. Even though he wrote in the 70s, his teachings have a lasting impact that still resonates today. He advocates for design that works for the sake of the people, and not just for consumerism/profit.

According to him, as designers, we always have a choice to use our gifts FOR the people. It is ethical for us to understand who our target audience is and what they care about before we create.

There is already too much low-quality content out in the world, vying for human attention. So I least I can do as a social media designer is to create content that adds value to my audience's scrolling time.

Viktor Papanek now lives in my head as my Design Angel. How about you? Who's the one person you look up to in your profession or business?

In 2021, you still need a perfect Instagram grid layout to increase engagement. True or false?

The answer? True, but it doesn't need to be perfect!

Facts: a well-designed Instagram grid showcases your brand's identity visually. And because we humans are visual creatures, we quickly gravitate towards brands whose posts are appealing to our tastes.

Aesthetic grids work best for creative and lifestyle brands.

But, it is a passe practice to create a set of tiled graphics or photos and post them all in one day for the sake of aesthetics! This produces less engagement and causes Feed fatigue for Instagram users. After all, the point of your content should be to provide the best value for your audience right now, without wearing them out.

So, what kind of grid layouts should I make in 2021?

In 2021, the most popular layouts are simpler. No need to cut up a photo into 9 different posts! You can just use a single color scheme across all your posts. Or make a small group of 3-6 similar-themed photos or graphics, but still schedule them to be posted one at a time (1/day is perfect).

Remember that the context of your content is more important.

How about you? What's the reason behind your Feed's design? What value are you providing for your audience?

The most followed social media pages give away one most valuable thing to their audience for FREE. Can you guess what it is?

It's KNOWLEDGE.

Ever since Google was invented, people have grown wiser and more discerning when it comes to their buying decisions. They can't easily be moved by a traditional ad anymore. A quick Google search and they'll find exactly what they need for free.

A brand that's focused on educating their audience first builds trust and authority, especially when the knowledge they provide is leading in their niche. A good example is , with their blogs, courses, and social media posts about marketing, which remain free to anyone who needs them. And at the same time, they are created by the top experts in marketing. As a result, their business software products don't need much advertising at all. People know and trust their company as the authority for marketing solutions.

As a brand or a business, think of one idea, knowledge or skill that is unique to you and valuable to your customers, that you can give away for free digitally. If you're selling knit sweaters, trying posting a knitting tutorial. If you're a tech founder, post short Tweetstorms about your predictions on cryptocurrency.

In this golden age of the Internet, it's a necessity to share knowledge for free.

MY WEEKDAY ROUTINE: AUGUST 2021

I’m a huge fan of daily schedules! Whenever I see my friends or an influencer share their schedules online, I always look at them and try to swipe their tools and techniques for managing their time consistently.

As a freelancer currently living with my parents during the pandemic, keeping a schedule is important not just to keep my business running, but to also keep healthy relationships with my loved ones, take care of myself and my household, and keep my spiritual life a priority.

I find Google Calendar the easiest tool to use to keep track of my schedule. I like to keep it simple as well. 9 time blocks on an average day, unless there are meetings, How about you? What’s your 2021 daily schedule? Care to share your tips in the comments below? 😊

Whenever I make social media post graphics for clients, I always check my ego. What does that mean for me and the client?

It means not letting my experience or past achievements get in the way of knowing what my client needs and what his business or brand embodies in my designs. Different clients require different styles of design. So for each new client, I open myself to learning something new.

Yes, it feels great to be confident and project an image of mastery or expertise in my work. But when it comes to client design, it's not about showcasing my creativity and skill. It's about making the client satisfied and lifting his business up in the process.

Here is a study I recently made for a client's Instagram. Would appreciate your feedback in the comments as well!

Do you love taking online courses? Let me know in the comments what you're into right now!

For me, online courses are both a necessity and a hobby. As a freelancer, it's my job to train and upskill myself with the latest knowledge in my industry, otherwise, I'll fall behind and won't be of good service to my clients. On the flip side, I have a very curious mind. And studying online courses satiates my appetite for new ideas, skills, and hacks.

But one can go overboard with the course-collecting (ahem, note to self!), which is why I committed to focusing on just 3 courses per month at a time. This way, I have a set deadline and a set budget for learning. And I make sure that I get the most out of each course.

Here are the 3 courses I chose for June. My objective is to update my branding knowledge, learn effective strategies to get my ideal clients, and explore the possibilities of a career in illustration. You might be interested to try them out as well!
