Is “No Pain, No Gain” a Safe Way to Work Out?

We all know working out and seeing results is about "no pain, no gain," but when should you keep going and when is it time to stop? Eric Chen, a running coach and injury prevention trainer at Sports Club/LA, recently broke it down for us. "If it's the first time you're feeling [pain in a certain area], finish the workout, then ice and foam roll that specific area when you get home," he advises. Then "if it reoccurs the second or third time, see a professional."

Why should you sometimes power through the pain instead of calling it on your workout? Because training isn't just about what your body can do but also how you've prepared mentally to deal with issues that can hamper your performance. "If you're new to working out, aches and pains are normal. With something like endurance running, you're going to feel pain and tightness," Eric explains. "But if it's not lingering and if it hasn't bothered you before, you can probably push through and finish." Knowing how to react when you experience something uncomfortable during your workout will help you become a stronger, more prepared athlete overall.

Not all pain should be treated the same, however; Eric is quick to note that certain pains are always a cue to cut your workout short. "A burning sensation in any muscle group automatically means stop right there and rest," he warns. And he says while people normally don't experience sharp pain during a workout, if you do it could signal a pinched nerve, so discontinue your workout if you experience this sensation as well.

5 Yoga Poses to Relieve Back Pain

1. Half Lord of the Fishes Pose
Twists like the Half Lord of the Fishes pose are great for the back because they lengthen and strengthen the spine. Be sure to pay attention to your body while doing this pose; if you are in a lot of back pain, start slowly before going too deep into the pose. As an alternative try the One-legged Seated Spinal Twist instead.

2. Downward Facing Dog
While many people think of the tried and true Downward Facing Dog as a go-to stretch for the calves, it's great for the back, too. Downward Facing Dog stretches out and aligns the spine, undoing all the hunching over we do throughout the day.

3. Cat and Cow Pose
Whenever my back feels achy, I love doing the Cat and Cow pose because it warms up my spine and feels a bit like a gentle massage.

4. Triangle Pose
Triangle pose is a test of balance and wonderful for back alignment. This pose helps lengthen the sides of the torso where a surprising amount of tension can hide. If your neck is bothering you too, go ahead and looks down at your front foot instead of your top hand.

5. Fish Pose
Relieve stiffness in the neck, shoulders, and back with Fish pose. It's a great beginner pose and will help stretch out your spine too; plus it's the perfect antidote for a day spent hunched over a desk.

Exercises for People with Arthritis

Arthritis is a joint disorder that plagues a large segment of our population. It is caused by the inflammation of joints. There are more than 100 different types of arthritis but the most common ones are Osteoarthritis and Rheumatoid arthritis. The former is a degenerative disease affecting the joints, mainly knees, hips, feet, spine and hands while the latter is a systemic inflammatory disease affecting the synovial membrane of joints. Dr. A. Arun Kumar , Snap Fitness India talks about exercises for people with arthritis and the prevention of arthritis.

Arthritis can be identified by a variety of symptoms like muscle weakness, fatigue, pain, stiffness and swelling, which inhibit leading an active lifestyle. As a fitness expert, the main goal is to engage such clients in regular exercise to improve the health status and overall mobility and flexibility. Increasing everyday activities, improving cardio-vascular endurance and muscle strength can go a long way in augmenting the overall well being of someone suffering from arthritis.

We always focus on both the functional and fitness status of arthritis patients through a set of exercises especially designed for those dealing with this condition. This can be achieved through resistance training with machines, elastic bands and Isometrics.

Flexibility exercises must be performed once or twice daily, using a pain-free range of motion.

Cardiovascular exercises should be initiated in short bouts (10 minutes to begin with). This can be increased gradually by adding five minutes per session and eventually reaching a total duration of 30 minutes. Water-based exercises, walking and cycling are some options that work well as cardiovascular exercises in such cases.

Functional activities like climbing stairs, sitting and then standing etc should be performed daily. It is important to remember that in the initial stages these exercises must be performed with low intensity and in short durations. High repetitions, overstretching and hyper mobility should be avoided.

Discontinuous exercise bouts of 5-10 minutes may be necessary in the case of de-conditioned patients. If the patient is suffering from severe pain then exercising must be avoided completely. Conditions for exercise termination include unusual pain, fatigue, weakness, swelling etc.

Hydrotherapy is also very beneficial for patients suffering from arthritis.
