S.C.U.B.A. diving is a rewarding and beautiful activity when practiced responsibly, with safety always taking priority over depth, time, or adventure.
The recent diving accident in the Maldives is a sobering reminder that even experienced divers can face life-threatening situations underwater. As a physician and a diver, providing medical clearance and emergency procedures for divers here in Sabang Puerto Galera Philippines, I would like to emphasize that diving safety begins long before entering the water.
Proper medical fitness to dive, honest disclosure of health conditions, adherence to dive limits, adequate surface intervals, hydration, equipment checks, and respecting environmental conditions are essential components of safe diving. No dive is worth risking a life. Even minor symptoms after a dive should never be ignored, as early recognition and treatment of diving-related injuries can significantly improve outcomes.
