🦷 Dry Socket (Alveolitis): Why Does It Hurt So Much?
One of the most painful complications after a tooth extraction is dry socket (alveolar osteitis). It occurs when the protective blood clot is lost too early, leaving the underlying bone and nerve endings exposed.
⚠️ Common symptoms:
• Intense, throbbing pain 2–4 days after extraction
• Pain radiating to the ear or jaw
• Bad breath or unpleasant taste
• An empty-looking socket with exposed bone

• Smoking or va**ng
• Vigorous rinsing or spitting too soon
• Poor oral hygiene
• Difficult extractions
• Previous history of dry socket

A dentist can gently irrigate the socket, remove debris, place a medicated dressing if needed, and prescribe appropriate pain management. Most patients experience significant relief after treatment.
