One way to help verify that your jewelry is real titanium: anodizing.

Implant grade titanium changes color through an electrical process called anodizing, while “surgical steel” usually just bubbles or sparks.

It’s completely safe for piercings since there’s no coating or plating involved, so the color won’t chip off or flake into your piercing.

Avoid plated jewelry on fresh piercings. It’s often lower quality, and once that coating starts to wear off, it can cause irritation.

Downsizing your jewelry 4 to 6 weeks after your piercing helps:

• prevent angle shifts
• reduce excess movement
• minimize irritation
• lower the chance of bumps forming
• make healing more comfortable

Your initial jewelry is intentionally longer to allow for swelling, but once that swelling goes down, keeping extra length can work against your healing.

A well-timed downsizing helps your piercing heal the way it’s supposed to.
