Stroke recovery looks different for every individual.

This client is living with aphasia and apraxia following a stroke. Communication and motor planning are areas we continue to support.

Before the stroke, art was a meaningful hobby. Today, we incorporate structured, task-based activities like leaf rubbing to work on:

• Motor planning
• Hand coordination
• Sequencing
• Attention
• Functional participation

In stroke rehabilitation, therapy is most effective when it is purposeful and connected to the person’s daily life and interests.

4 Ways to Support Early Writing Skills at Home

1️⃣ Strengthen Little Hands

Before letters come strength.

Try: playdough rolling, squeezing sponges in water play, picking up small toys with tongs.

Strong hands help with better crayon and pencil control.

2️⃣ Practice Pre-Writing Shapes

Lines and shapes come before letters!

Practice:
• Vertical lines
• Horizontal lines
• Circles
• Crosses

Draw them in sand, shaving cream, or on a chalkboard to make it fun.

3️⃣ Encourage Proper Grasp (Gently!)

Use short crayons or broken crayons to promote a more mature grip.

Avoid forcing, but model and guide instead.

4️⃣ Make It Play-Based

Writing doesn’t have to be worksheets.

Try:
• “Signing” artwork
• Writing the first letter of their name
• Drawing and “telling a story” about their picture

At this stage, exploration is more important than perfection.
