Learning Beyond Borders: LCP–NKTI Lung Transplant Team at SAHZU, Hangzhou, China 🇵🇭🤝🇨🇳

Our observership at the Second Affiliated Hospital of Zhejiang University School of Medicine (SAHZU) was an invaluable opportunity to learn from one of China’s highest-volume and most experienced lung transplant programs.

The visiting LCP–NKTI Lung Transplant Team, composed of thoracic surgeons, an anesthesiologist, critical care and pulmonology specialists, and our lung transplant coordinator, had the privilege of observing the entire transplant pathway from donor assessment and retrieval, recipient preparation and bilateral lung transplantation, to anesthesia, ECMO support, postoperative critical care, rehabilitation, and follow-up.

What impressed us most was not only the volume of lung transplantation performed, but the high standard of patient care and the highly organized and efficient system supporting every stage of the transplant journey. SAHZU demonstrated how clear protocols, rapid coordination, multidisciplinary teamwork, dedicated critical care, and meticulous postoperative management can translate into efficient and effective patient care.

We are deeply grateful to Prof. Jingyu Chen and the entire SAHZU Lung Transplant Team for their warm hospitality and generosity in sharing their knowledge, experience, and best practices.

We return to the Philippines with valuable lessons and renewed determination to strengthen the LCP–NKTI Lung Transplant Program, transforming what we observed into better systems, stronger teamwork, and better outcomes for Filipino patients.
