Monochorionic diamniotic twins occur in about 1 in 300 pregnancies. They are identical twins that share one placenta (monochorionic) but develop in separate amniotic sacs (diamniotic), typically from a single egg splitting late.

Compared with dichorionic twins, they face increased risks because of the shared circulation. In about 15%, an imbalance in blood exchange occurs, such as twin-twin transfusion syndrome and twin anemia polycythemia sequence.
