IN PHOTOS: What began in 1996 as a small initiative in selected hospitals, the Philippine Newborn Screening (NBS) Program has evolved into one of the country’s most successful population-based health programs, sustained by decades of collaboration among healthcare workers, institutions, and government partners.

A thanksgiving reunion brought together pioneering coordinators, clinicians, and advocates of the NBS honoring the first 24 pilot hospitals that laid the foundation of what is now a nationwide public health system reaching millions of Filipino newborns.

Wrapping up the month of May with the 3rd Thalassemia Forum as part of the 30th Anniversary of the Newborn Screening Program!

The Institute of Human Genetics Newborn Screening Center - NIH, Hemoglobinopathy Reference Unit & Clinical Genetics Unit and Philippine General Hospital (PGH) Continuity Clinic, in partnership with the Division of Hematology and Oncology, Department of Pediatrics, University of the Philippines–Philippine General Hospital (UP-PGH), Department of Health – Metro Manila Center for Health Development (DOH-MMCHD), and the Philippine Children’s Medical Center (PCMC) Continuity Clinic, has successfully conducted the 3rd Thalassemia forum that served as a platform for education, collaboration, and empowerment for healthcare professionals, advocates, patients, parents, guardians, and families affected by thalassemia.

In the Philippines, many remain unaware that they carry the Thalassaemia gene or live without a proper diagnosis until complications arise.

Today, we turn the spotlight on every "unseen" individual. Let’s bridge the gap in diagnosis and care so that no Filipino living with thalassaemia is left behind.
