Namatay ang isang apat na taong gulang na lalaki sa General Santos City mahigit isang buwan matapos umano itong makagat ng isang a*ong-gala na pinaniniwalaang may rabies.

Agad siyang dinala sa ospital kung saan nilinis at tinahi ang kaniyang mga sugat. Binigyan din siya ng bakuna laban sa tetanus.

Matapos ibigay ang tetanus shot noong gabi, kinaumagahan ay ibinigay naman sa bata ang unang dose ng bakuna laban sa rabies. Naka-tatlong dose ng anti-rabies shot ang bata pero bago ang ikaapat na dose, nakitaan na umano ng sintomas ng rabies ang bata.

Ayon sa ospital kung saan na-admit ang bata, karaniwang apat na dose ng bakuna ang ibinibigay sa nakagat ng a*o ngunit hindi na umabot sa huling dose ang pasyente. Nagkaroon din siya ng sugat mula sa kagat ng a*o na malapit sa kaniyang ulo.

”Unfortunately, umabot siya ng third dose pero hindi na siya umabot ng fourth dose. We categorize yung mga sugat or kagat ng a*o… sa pasyente, Category 3… masyado nang malapit sa ulo. Meron tayong ibinibigay na immunuglobilin, which is active yung ibinigay na bakuna,” ayon kay Dr. Jeorge P. Royeca City Hospital Chief, Dr. Ryan Oscar Aplicador.

⏳️ It took 4 months before she showed symptoms. But once symptoms started, she passed away within just 5 days.

🦠 Rabies can be very deceptive because the virus may stay hidden in the body for weeks or even months after a bite or scratch. During this time, the person may feel completely normal.

🧠 But once the virus reaches the brain and symptoms begin, the disease becomes almost always fatal.

🤒 Typical early symptoms:

3️⃣ Rabies immunoglobulin (RIG) when needed

“Bakit high risk ang kagat o kalmot sa ulo?”

Ang kagat o kalmot sa ulo (lalo na face, scalp, leeg) ay high risk sa rabies dahil:

1️⃣ Malapit sa utak — Ang rabies virus dumadaan sa nerves papunta sa utak. Kapag sa ulo ang sugat, mas maikli ang distance kaya mas mabilis makakarating ang virus.

2️⃣ Maraming nerve endings — Ang mukha at anit ay may maraming nerves, kaya mas madali para sa virus na puma*ok sa nervous system.

3️⃣ Mas mabilis ang incubation — Kagat sa ulo/face ay maaaring magdulot ng mas maikling incubation period, ibig sabihin puwedeng mas mabilis lumabas ang rabies.

4️⃣ DOH Category III exposure often applies — Maraming kagat sa face/scalp ay itinuturing severe exposure, at mangangailangan ng bakuna at Rabies Immunoglobulin (RIG).

5️⃣ Mas delikado sa bata — Madalas sa bata, kagat ng a*o napupunta sa face/head level, kaya very concerning.

✅️ Importante:
Kahit maliit lang ang kalmot o sugat sa ulo, huwag maliitin.
✔ Hugasan agad ng sabon at running water for at least 15 minutes
