๐จ PHILIPPINE RED CROSS ACTIVATES EMERGENCY FUND CAMPAIGN FOR COMMUNITIES AFFECTED BY THE MAGNITUDE 7.8 EARTHQUAKE IN MINDANAO ๐จ
A powerful magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck west of General Santos City on June 8, triggering tsunami warnings, evacuations, and disruptions across several parts of Mindanao.
Under the directives of the PRC Chairman and CEO Richard J. Gordon, the PRC Chapters have deployed personnel to conduct rapid assessments and provide immediate assistance to affected communities within the minutes of the earthquake. The RC143 volunteers have been mobilized, while ambulances have been dispatched in North Cotabato, South Cotabato, and Gingoog City to respond to emergency medical needs and monitor affected areas. PRC personnel also provided medical assistance to students who experienced hyperventilation following the strong ground shaking.
Health and Welfare Services teams are currently assessing hospitals and healthcare facilities, while chapter responders continue monitoring communities that may be affected by aftershocks, displacement, and possible tsunami impacts. To ensure readiness for further developments, PRC has placed emergency response assets on standby across Regions XI and XII, including six ambulances, three food trucks, four water tankers, two Volunteer Emergency Response Vehicles (VERVs), a rescue boat, a Humvee, and cargo vehicles ready for deployment.
"Our teams are already on the ground conducting assessments, providing emergency medical assistance, and coordinating with local authorities in affected areas. We are calling on the public and our partners to support the Philippine Red Cross Emergency Appeal so we can immediately provide relief, safe water, healthcare, and other critical assistance to communities that may be affected in the coming days," said PRC Secretary General Dr. Gwendolyn Pang.
PRC Chairman and CEO Richard J. Gordon emphasized the importance of swift humanitarian action, "When disasters strike, the speed of humanitarian response can make a significant difference for affected families. We appeal to the public, our donors, and partners to help us sustain these efforts and prepare for the needs that may arise in the coming days."
As assessments continue, the Philippine Red Cross is preparing to expand emergency medical services, relief distributions, safe water provision, psychosocial support, shelter assistance, and recovery interventions for affected communities.
The Philippine Red Cross remains on full alert and stands ready to scale up its response in coordination with local government units, national agencies, and humanitarian partners.
