Could basophils do more than drive allergic inflammation?

A new study published in Allergy shows that basophils actively contribute to skin wound healing by producing IL-4 and IL-13, which help direct macrophages towards tissue repair functions.

Researchers found that the absence of basophils, or the loss of basophil-derived IL-4/IL-13, led to delayed wound healing, impaired angiogenesis and defective tissue regeneration.

The findings reveal an important regenerative role for type 2 immune responses and may open new avenues for regenerative medicine.
