There are many helpful ways to support a friend or loved one who shares that they have HIV. Start by listening without judgment, acknowledging what they've shared, and then learning more about HIV. Let them lead the conversation and don’t make assumptions.

LGBTQ+ Americans over the age of 55 face additional barriers when seeking HIV testing and prevention resources.

Among HRC Foundation BRIDGE Survey respondents ages 55+ who wanted an HIV test but did not receive one:
• 46.2% were worried about privacy or confidentiality
• 33.8% were worried a provider would judge them
• 33.5% didn’t want anyone else to find out
• 30.3% didn’t know where to go for HIV testing or prevention

Stigma can also affect people who are already connected to care. 97% reported having a regular healthcare provider, yet 12% said they had felt judged, treated differently, or had their concerns dismissed in primary care.

On National HIV/AIDS and Aging Awareness Day, this is your reminder that HIV prevention and affordable care should be accessible to ALL OF US.

Daniel Garza is a long‑term HIV survivor, educator, and storyteller using humor, culture, and lived experience to break stigma and build community. Through coaching, outreach, and digital advocacy, he creates safe, human spaces where people feel seen, supported, and empowered to thrive with dignity.
