Post-Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP) Anti-Rabies Vaccine Regimen

If you have NEVER been vaccinated against rabies before:
💉 Day 0 – First dose (day of exposure)
💉 Day 3 – Second dose
💉 Day 7 – Third dose
💉 Day 14 – Fourth dose (if IM)
💉 Day 28 – Fourth dose

For Category III exposures (deep bites, multiple bites, bites on the face, head, neck, hands, fingers, or ge****ls):

💉 Rabies Immunoglobulin (RIG) should be given once on Day 0, infiltrated into and around the wound, in addition to the vaccine.

If you were PREVIOUSLY vaccinated (PrEP or completed PEP):
💉 Day 0 – Booster dose
💉 Day 3 – Booster dose

❌ RIG is not needed for previously vaccinated individuals.

Important:
Wash the wound immediately with soap and running water for 15 minutes.
Seek medical care as soon as possible after any animal bite or scratch.
Complete the recommended vaccine schedule for the best protection.

📢The Importance and Difference of Anti-Rabies PrEP and PEP📢

Rabies is a deadly but preventable disease. Anti-rabies vaccination can protect people before or after an exposure, depending on the situation.

💙 PRE-EXPOSURE PROPHYLAXIS (PrEP)
Protection BEFORE exposure🟢

PrEP is anti-rabies vaccination given before a person is bitten or scratched, mainly for people who have an increased or ongoing risk of contact with animals.
Who may benefit?
🩺 Veterinarians and veterinary workers
🐕 Animal handlers and rescuers
🏥 Animal-bite/clinic and laboratory personnel with relevant exposure
🐾 People with frequent animal contact
✈️ Travelers going to areas where rabies is common and prompt medical care may be difficult
Why is it important?
It prepares the immune system in advance. If an exposure occurs later, management can be simpler, but PrEP does NOT mean you should ignore a bite or scratch. You still need prompt medical assessment.

❤️ POST-EXPOSURE PROPHYLAXIS (PEP)🔴
Protection AFTER exposure
PEP is treatment started after a possible rabies exposure, such as a bite, scratch, or saliva contact with broken skin or mucous membranes.
PEP may include:
💧 Immediate wound washing with soap and running water for about 15 minutes
💉 Rabies vaccine according to the recommended schedule
🧪 Rabies immunoglobulin (RIG) when indicated, particularly for certain severe/category III exposures
Why is it important?
Prompt and appropriate PEP can prevent rabies from developing before the virus reaches the nervous system.

🔑 EASY WAY TO REMEMBER
PrEP = BEFORE exposure → PREPARE your immune system.
PEP = AFTER exposure → PREVENT rabies from developing.

⚠️ If you are bitten or scratched by a potentially rabid animal, don't wait for symptoms. Wash the wound immediately and seek professional medical assessment as soon as possible.

When the rain rises, stay alert and keep your family—and your pets—safe! ⚠️❤️

Floodwaters can bring hidden dangers, and frightened animals may become more stressed or aggressive. If you are bitten or scratched, wash the wound immediately with soap and running water for at least 15 minutes and seek anti-rabies care as soon as possible.

🐶🐱 HOW IS RABIES TRANSMITTED TO HUMANS? 🦠
“A small bite can carry a big risk—don’t wait, get checked!”
Rabies is a serious viral disease transmitted through the saliva of an infected animal. It can enter the body through:
🐕 BITES – The most common way rabies is transmitted.
🐈 SCRATCHES – Especially when the skin is broken and contaminated with saliva.
👅 SALIVA CONTACT – When saliva from an infected animal touches an open wound, cut, or sore.
🦇 BAT EXPOSURE – Bat bites or scratches can be tiny and may sometimes go unnoticed.
🚨 WHAT SHOULD YOU DO AFTER A BITE OR SCRATCH?
🧼 Wash immediately with soap and running water for 15 minutes.
🧴 Apply an antiseptic such as povidone-iodine.
💉 Seek medical attention immediately for proper rabies exposure assessment and treatment.
❤️ Remember: Rabies is almost 100% fatal once symptoms appear, but it is preventable when proper treatment is given promptly.

During the rainy season, animals may seem more likely to bite or scratch because changes in the environment can affect their behavior. 🐶🐱🌧️
Why can bites and scratches increase during rainy weather?
🐾 Stress and fear – Heavy rain, thunder, and flooding can frighten animals, making them defensive or aggressive.
🏠 Displacement from their habitat – Flooding and strong rains may force animals, especially stray animals, to seek shelter in unfamiliar places where they may feel threatened.
🍖 Difficulty finding food – Bad weather can make food scarce, causing some animals to become stressed and more protective of resources.
🤒 Illness or discomfort – Animals may experience stress or illness during changing weather conditions. However, rainy weather itself does not cause rabies.
👶 More accidental contact – People and animals may share covered areas or shelters during rain, increasing the chance of encounters and accidental bites or scratches.
🩺 Important Reminder
Any bite or scratch that breaks the skin should be taken seriously. Rabies is almost always fatal once symptoms appear, but it is preventable with prompt and appropriate post-exposure care.
🧼 Immediately wash the wound with soap and running water for 15 minutes, then seek assessment at an Animal Bite Center or healthcare facility as soon as possible.
