"Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) offers important advantages over Post-Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP)—especially for people at high risk of rabies exposure."
Why is PrEP beneficial?
Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) is a preventive rabies vaccination given before any bite or exposure. It is recommended for veterinarians, animal handlers, laboratory workers, animal bite center staff, wildlife workers, and travelers to high-risk areas.
Benefits of PrEP:
✅ Provides protection before exposure occurs.
✅ If bitten, only 2 booster vaccine doses (Days 0 and 3) are generally needed.
✅ Rabies Immunoglobulin (RIG) is usually not required after exposure in previously vaccinated individuals.
✅ Simplifies post-exposure treatment and saves valuable time during emergencies.
✅ Provides peace of mind for people with frequent or occupational exposure to animals.
How does PEP differ?
Post-Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP) is given after a bite, scratch, or saliva exposure from a potentially rabid animal.
PEP is highly effective and lifesaving when started promptly, but it usually involves:
More vaccine doses for people who have never been vaccinated.
RIG for Category III exposures in previously unvaccinated individuals.
Immediate medical evaluation and treatment.
Important note
PrEP is not a replacement for PEP. Even if someone has received PrEP, they should still seek medical care immediately after any suspected rabies exposure to receive the recommended booster doses and wound management.
"Protect Before Exposure. Stay One Step Ahead of Rabies.
Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) helps prepare your body before a bite occurs, reducing the need for extensive treatment after exposure. It is the ideal choice for individuals at high risk of rabies exposure. Even if you've had PrEP, always seek immediate medical care after any animal bite or scratch."
