Another Homeschooling Monday post :-) This is how we do Math

Math is not one of our favorite subjects because numbers can be very intimidating.

When we started homeschooling, I was already aware of Singapore Math so I decided to apply the style to make teaching the subject more interesting and relatable. Unlike the traditional approach to math which is too abstract, Singapore-style uses manipulatives. The children can touch and see the numbers before proceeding to the abstract principles. It helps them apply and relate math to everyday life.

We also used KooBits for video lessons and practice tests.

Motherhood is transformative.

As if I really needed to say that, right?

There is nothing like seeing your baby for first time. Being in complete awe of finally holding the one that grew inside you for 9 months. That moment when no one and nothing else matters, just you and your child. You are captivated, spellbound, blown away; a heart growing with love you thought you were never capable of giving. And suddenly, you are an entirely different person.

A trainee again after more than 13 years

Going back to the healthcare setup after being a full-time mom was quite nerve-wracking. The familiar smell of bleach, the continuous humming of machines, and the shuffling of feet all bring back memories.

I was fortunate to have a second family that welcomed and encouraged me. Blessed to be given another opportunity to serve.

Simple Fried Flat Bread

You will need:
4 cups/500g flour
1 tsp coarse sea salt
2 tsp sugar
2 tsp instant yeast
2 Tbsp oil
1 1/4 cups water

We love eating this with curries; or stuffed with cooked and seasoned meat or cheese

Experiencing and being one with nature

Remembering this moment when we went to Pawicare to release baby turtles. We got to listen to the staff share their advocacy and the process involved in saving these beautiful creatures. I remember how my children (especially my son) paid close attention to the short lecture and how thrilled they were to hold these tiny sea turtles and to watch them be carried away by the waves.

There is nothing like seeing the things that most just read from books. That's when History comes alive.

This is one of my favorite part of homeschooling, visiting museums and historical sites. Trying to imagine how our ancestors were like and how their lives (and in turn ours) were shaped by tradition, culture, and religion.

They say, "Never bring your children to the grocery store." You will end up way over budget.

Well, there is some truth to that, but I see it as a teachable moment.

Following a grocery list, learning price ranges and differences, trying to stick to a budget, deciding between food/brand choices, reading food labels, and being part of selecting food for the family.
