Before the television shows, bestselling books and packed stages, Steve Harvey says he spent three years homeless and living in his car while trying to build a comedy career.
He has described washing in public restrooms, rest stops and other public facilities while traveling between small comedy jobs. In one official retelling, Harvey said that in 1991 he was sleeping in his car with only $35 when he received a call inviting him to perform at the Apollo.
Harvey later summarized the promise that sustained his faith during that period:
"If you let me make it, I'm going to tell everybody about you."
His official biography says a national comedy competition in 1990 helped lead to his breakthrough on Showtime at the Apollo. What followed was not instant perfection, but the beginning of a career he had once pursued without a home or any guarantee that it would work.
One detail frequently repeated online should be corrected. Some profiles call his vehicle a "1976 Ford Tempo," but that model was not introduced until the 1984 model year. The safest accurate wording is simply that Harvey lived in his car.
