Thank you for this Mam Grace Banal, RND
May nagtanong (genuine question):
❓️Physicians ba ang nagpe-prescribe ng diet for patients based on their medical diagnosis?
Thank you for that wonderful question 👸
⚠️ MAGKAIBA PO ANG MEDICAL DIAGNOSIS AT NUTRITION DIAGNOSIS.
Example:
👉Medical diagnosis is Diabetes Type 2, hypertension - doctor/physician lang gumagawa nyan.
👉Nutrition diagnosis can be - Elevated fasting blood sugar, BP and abnormal lipid profile (NC2.2) related to inconsistent carbohydrate intake, high intake of saturated fat, and nutrition-related knowledge deficit as evidenced by dietary assessment showing x grams of carbohydrate per day and increased consumption of red meat and low intake of fiber. DIETITIAN lang po makakagawa nyan.
Nutrition diagnosis can ONLY be done after conducting NUTRITION ASSESSMENT:
✅️ anthropometric
✅️ biochemical
✅️ clinical
✅️ dietary ASSESSMENT
After NUTRITION ASSESSMENT and DIAGNOSIS, saka palang makakaprovide ng NUTRITION INTERVENTION, MONITORING AND EVALUATION.
This is called NUTRITION CARE PROCESS.
👸✅️⚠️ I therefore conclude:
DIET PRESCRIPTION SHOULD ONLY BE DONE BASED ON THE NUTRITION DIAGNOSIS.
A philosopher once said:
PRESCRIPTION - INTERVENTION - WITHOUT ASSESSMENT - is MALPRACTICE.
✅️ INTERPROFESSIONAL COLLABORATION IS THE KEY:
Nurses - screening, anthrop measurement
Medtechs - lab tests
Physicians - physical exam, medical diagnosis, medical intervention, referring nutritionally at-risk patients to MNT, initial diet recommendations
Dietitians - dietary assessment, NFPE, nutrition diagnosis, nutrition intervention - MNT upon referral of MD
Alltogether now: Monitoring and Evaluation, evidence-based practice, patient education
