OFFICIAL PUBLIC STATEMENT
The Measles-Rubella Supplemental Immunization Activity (MR-SIA) officially started on August 10, 2026 and will continue until August 28, 2026 across the Province of Sorsogon. This activity is a result of extensive preparation and collaboration among the Department of Health, Provincial Health Office of Sorsogon, RHUs, CHOs, LGUs, health workers, and other partners, with one shared goal: to protect every child from measles and rubella.
We recognize that some parents may have concerns about their child's health and well-being following vaccination. Such concerns are natural, and every parent who raises them deserves to be heard, respected, and given a clear and honest response. No concern involving the health of a child is ever dismissed. When any case is brought to the attention of local health authorities, the Provincial Health Office of Sorsogon, together with the Department of Health Sorsogon and the concerned Municipal or City Health Offices, immediately coordinates to review the case, reach out to the family, and ensure that the child receives appropriate medical attention and support.
It is important to understand that an illness occurring after vaccination does not automatically mean that the vaccine caused it. In vaccine safety monitoring, such an occurrence is called an Adverse Event Following Immunization (AEFI). Every reported AEFI is carefully assessed to determine whether it is related to the vaccine or is coincidental or caused by another condition.
The MR vaccine is safe and effective, and vaccines undergo rigorous evaluation before public use and continuous safety monitoring thereafter.
Measles remains one of the most contagious diseases known, where 1 infected individual can infect 12-18 more people due to its airborne nature. It can cause serious complications such as pneumonia, severe diarrhea and dehydration, encephalitis, blindness, and death. Maintaining approximately 95% vaccination coverage is essential to interrupt transmission and protect our communities.
We therefore encourage everyone to share information responsibly-based on science, evidence, verified facts, and compassion. We should never dismiss genuine concerns, but neither should we make conclusions about vaccine safety without proper medical assessment and evidence.
Our health workers will continue to reach every community-rain or shine, across rivers and seas, and up to the farthest barangays-to ensure that no child is left unprotected.
