“METOREIA URBAN HEALTH CENTRE LABOR WARD – PARTNERSHIP BRINGING SAFER DELIVERIES TO MOTHERS IN PORT MORESBY”

The National Capital District Provincial Health Authority (NCDPHA), in partnership with Port Moresby General Hospital (PMGH) under their current Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), is strengthening maternity services across the city.

Through this partnership, the Labor Ward at Metoreia Urban Health Centre is now fully supported by trained midwives from NCDPHA and PMGH, with specialist doctors from PMGH providing weekly care. The facility is equipped with new delivery beds and operates 24 hours, ensuring mothers have access to safe and reliable services close to home.

The Deputy Director, Medical Services at PMGH, Dr. Henao Asa, said, “Our vision at PMGH is to be the ultimate provider of quality healthcare for Papua New Guinea.” He said that, “This partnership with NCDPHA allows us to extend specialist services into the community, reducing congestion at PMGH while ensuring mothers can deliver safely at Metoreia.” Dr. Asa added that, “With weekly specialist support and trained midwives, we are committed to bringing healthcare services closer to families and achieving the national health plan goals of leaving no one behind.”

Through this collaboration, Metoreia has increased its capacity from just a few deliveries a day to 9–11 babies delivered daily, helping reduce overcrowding at PMGH and bringing specialist care directly into the community.

Dr. Robin Oge, Chief Executive Officer of NCDPHA, said, “Every mother deserves safe, dignified care when giving birth.” He said that by working together with Port Moresby General Hospital, we are expanding maternity services so that mothers across the city can deliver their babies safely at Metoreia Urban Health Centre. “This partnership is about bringing care closer to our people and ensuring no mother is left behind,” Dr. Oge. “I sincerely acknowledge PMGH CEO Dr. P**i Molumi and his management team for their strong commitment and continued collaboration with NCDPHA to strengthen health services for our communities,” he added.

Expectant mothers are encouraged to visit the Metoreia Urban Health Centre Labor Ward to access these services. The facility is ready to provide safe deliveries, postnatal care, and ongoing support for mothers and newborns.

“SPECIALIST INTERNAL MEDICINE SERVICES EXTENDED TO METOREIA URBAN HEALTH CENTRE"

The National Capital District Provincial Health Authority (NCDPHA), in partnership with Port Moresby General Hospital (PMGH), is pleased to announce the extension of specialist internal medicine services to Metoreia Urban Health Centre (MUHC). This initiative, supported by the existing Memorandum of Understanding between PMGH and NCDPHA, will help PMGH by providing closer access to specialist care for communities in the National Capital District.

Dr. Willie Toua, a Specialist in Internal Medicine at PMGH and a proud son of Hanuabada, has extended his clinic to MUHC to relieve the long queues of stroke patients waiting at PMGH.

HEO. Regina Wuri, Clinic Manager for MUHC, said that “Dr. Toua will conduct weekly Tuesday clinics at MUHC alongside NCDPHA’s Internal Medicine Physician, Dr. Mary Kaevakore.” She said that this collaboration represents a significant step toward improving access to specialist care for patients in Motu Koitabu villages and surrounding communities.

“We are grateful for Dr. Toua’s commitment to extend his services to our clinic,” said HEO Wuri. “This initiative will greatly benefit our patients and communities who often face challenges accessing specialist care at PMGH, " she added.

NCDPHA and MUHC plan to establish a dedicated Lifestyle Clinic to provide patients with a pathway to receive care closer to their homes and villages. Outreach programs and free lifestyle screenings will also be conducted at MUHC to address the growing burden of lifestyle diseases.

The NCDPHA’s Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Robin Oge, said, “This partnership reflects our commitment to bringing specialist services closer to the people.” He added that by working with PMGH and dedicated professionals like Dr. Toua and Dr. Kaevakore, we are strengthening our health system and ensuring that communities have access to quality care. “We welcome the support of partners to sustain this initiative and reduce the burden of lifestyle diseases in our villages,” said Dr. Oge.

NCDPHA appeals to partners and stakeholders to support this initiative. Together, we can help reduce the burden of lifestyle diseases in Motu Koitabu villages and the National Capital District at large.

“OFFICIAL SIGNING OF TERMS OF REFERENCE FOR NCDPHA INFECTION PREVENTION & CONTROL – WASH SUB-COMMITTEE WITH WATERAID PNG"

The National Capital District Provincial Health Authority (NCDPHA), in partnership with WaterAid PNG, has officially signed the Terms of Reference (ToR) for the newly established Infection Prevention & Control – WASH Sub-Committee. This milestone marks a significant step in strengthening water, sanitation, and hygiene (WaSH) systems in healthcare facilities, with a particular focus on maternal and newborn health.

The sub-committee will bring together key healthcare providers, facility managers, and partners to implement sustainable WaSH programs that meet the National Health Service Standards (NHSS). Its core functions include conducting routine assessments, prioritizing interventions in maternity and newborn care units, training staff, and embedding climate-resilient water and waste management systems.

WaterAid PNG Country Director Ms. Annmarie Paul said, “The signing of this ToR is a landmark moment.” She added that, “This event sets the foundation for scaling WaSH improvements across NCDPHA’s managed health facilities and other PHAs in Papua New Guinea.” “Together, we are building resilient health systems that safeguard lives and promote dignity in care,” said Ms. Paul.
The NCDPHA’s Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Robin Oge, said, “This partnership demonstrates our commitment to safe and quality healthcare.” He further emphasized that, “By strengthening infection prevention and hygiene practices, we are protecting mothers, newborns, and communities, while ensuring our facilities meet national and international standards.”

The WIMH program, co-funded by the Australian NGO Cooperation Program (ANCP) and previously supported by the Swedish International Development Agency (SIDA), is currently being piloted at 9-Mile Urban Clinic (NCDPHA) and Porebada Health Facility (Central PHA). Scoping studies and capacity-building activities are underway to ensure successful implementation and sustainability.

This signing event underscores the collective commitment of NCDPHA, WaterAid PNG, and partners to embed infection prevention and control practices at the heart of healthcare delivery, ensuring safer maternal and newborn care for the people of Papua New Guinea.
