Researchers studied bre.astfeeding mothers whose babies were hospitalized with respiratory infections.

They compared:
- Milk from mothers of sick babies
- Milk from mothers of healthy babies

And looked at immune cells inside the milk. When a baby is sick, the mother's milk changes its immune makeup. Specifically, the milk contains more immune cells that help fight infection. This includes:
- T cells
- Helper T cells
- Cytotoxic T cells

These cells play a major role in fighting viruses and infections.

The study found that the more severe the baby's illness, the higher the level of immune cells in the milk. This means the bre.ast milk adapts in real time to support the baby's immune system.

How does this happen?

Researchers believe baby's saliva and microbes interact with the bre.ast during feeding. This triggers immune signaling. The bre.ast then produces targeted immune cells.
