Screening means checking for a disease before symptoms appear. For lung cancer, low-dose computed tomography, or LDCT, may be considered for defined high-risk individuals, particularly based on age and smoking history.
Screening is not recommended for everyone. It can also involve potential harms, including false-positive results, additional tests, overdiagnosis, and radiation exposure. The decision should therefore begin with a healthcare professional.
If you already have symptoms, that is different from screening. Consult a doctor who can assess the possible cause and determine which tests are appropriate for you.
Informed care begins with understanding your individual risk and options.
