🖐️ Dyshidrotic Eczema: Is It an Allergy?

Small, itchy blisters on the palms, sides of the fingers, or soles of the feet? It could be dyshidrotic eczema (pompholyx).

🔹 Is it caused by an allergy?
Not necessarily. Dyshidrotic eczema is a type of eczema with multiple possible triggers, and a true allergy is not always the cause.

Possible triggers include:
• Contact with irritants or allergens
• Sweating and heat
• Stress
• Atopic eczema or other skin conditions
• Certain metals, such as nickel or cobalt, in some individuals

👉 Patch testing may be considered when allergic contact dermatitis is suspected, especially when the eczema is recurrent or difficult to control.

If you frequently experience itchy, recurring blisters on your hands or feet, consult a board-certified allergist or dermatologist to help identify possible triggers and the appropriate treatment.

✔️ Use fragrance-free soaps, lotions, and detergents.
✔️ Wear soft, breathable cotton clothing and avoid rough fabrics like wool.
✔️ Keep your skin cool—heat and sweating can trigger itching.
✔️ Trim your nails to reduce skin damage from scratching.
✔️ Manage dust mites if you’re allergic by washing bedding regularly and reducing indoor dust.

Did you know? An elevated Total Serum IgE may be associated with - (allergic nose symptoms) and (hives)—but it does not confirm the diagnosis on its own.

🔹 Allergic Rhinitis
People with allergies to dust mites, pollen, molds, or pet dander often have higher Total IgE levels because their immune system produces more IgE antibodies in response to these allergens.

🔹 Chronic Urticaria (Hives)
Some patients with chronic urticaria also have elevated Total IgE. Higher levels may be linked to increased disease activity and, in some cases, may help guide treatment decisions.

⚠️ Important: A normal Total IgE does not rule out allergies or urticaria, and an elevated Total IgE does not always mean you have an allergy. Results should always be interpreted together with your symptoms, medical history, and, when appropriate, allergy testing.

If you’re experiencing persistent sneezing, itchy eyes, nasal congestion, or recurrent hives, consult your board-certified allergist for proper evaluation and personalized treatment.
