3‑day sickness in cattle is Bovine Ephemeral Fever (BEF), a viral disease spread by mosquitoes and biting midges that causes sudden fever, stiffness, lameness, drooling, and a sharp fall in milk yield.
It usually runs a short course of about 3 days, and most animals recover, but some become recumbent or develop complications such as bloat, pneumonia, abortion, or temporary infertility in bulls.
Treatment is supportive: early NSAIDs, fluids, calcium if needed, and good nursing care with rest, feed, water, and shelter.
Prevention focuses on vaccination where available and reducing insect exposure, especially after rain or flooding
