Main Routes of Aspergillosis in Poultry

Aspergillosis is a serious fungal respiratory disease in poultry, mainly caused by Aspergillus fumigatus. It is not usually spread from bird to bird, but develops from exposure to a spore-rich environment.

✔ Inhalation (Primary Route)
Birds inhale fungal spores present in contaminated litter, moldy feed, and hatchery air, leading to infection of lungs and air sacs.

✔ Hatchery / Egg Exposure
Contaminated eggshells allow spores to enter through pores or cracks, causing early infection in chicks (brooder aspergillosis).

✔ Feed-Borne Exposure
Moldy or improperly stored feed increases spore load, which birds inhale during feeding.

✔ Environmental Dust
Poor ventilation, litter dust, and overcrowded houses increase airborne fungal spores.

✔ Equipment Contamination
Dirty incubators, trays, and reused litter can continuously spread fungal spores in poultry houses.
