โœ…Common Peroneal Nerve
The common peroneal nerve (also called the common fibular nerve) is one of the two terminal branches of the sciatic nerve and is very important for movement and sensation in the lower leg.

๐Ÿ”น Origin
Arises from the sciatic nerve
Root values: L4, L5, S1, S2

๐Ÿ”น Course
Begins at the popliteal fossa (behind the knee)
Travels laterally along the biceps femoris muscle
Winds around the neck of the fibula (very superficial here โš ๏ธ)

Divides into two branches:
๐Ÿ‘‰deep peroneal nerve
๐Ÿ‘‰superficial peroneal nerve

๐Ÿ”น Branches & Functions
1. Deep Peroneal Nerve
Supplies anterior compartment of the leg
Muscles:
Tibialis anterior
Extensor digitorum longus
Extensor hallucis longus

Function:
Dorsiflexion of the foot (lifting the foot up)
Sensory:
Skin between the first and second toes

2. Superficial Peroneal Nerve
Supplies lateral compartment of the leg
Muscles:
Fibularis longus
Fibularis brevis

Function:
Eversion of the foot
Sensory:
Most of the dorsum (top) of the foot

๐Ÿ”น Additional Branches
Lateral sural cutaneous nerve; sensation to upper lateral leg
Communicating branch; contributes to sural nerve

๐Ÿ”น Clinical Importance โš ๏ธ
The nerve is highly vulnerable where it wraps around the neck of the fibula.

Injury causes:
Fracture of fibular neck
Tight plaster casts
Prolonged leg crossing

Signs of injury:
Foot drop (cannot dorsiflex foot)
High-stepping gait
Loss of sensation on dorsum of foot
