One of the biggest adjustments after Bariatric Surgery isn't just what you eat, but how you drink. In my clinic, patients often ask why they canโt have water with their meals anymore.
Here is the surgical reality:
Your new stomach pouch is much smaller. If you drink while eating, the liquid washes the food out of the pouch too quickly. This makes you feel hungry much sooner and can lead to overeating.
Your pouch has limited real estate. If you fill it with water during a meal, thereโs no room left for the high-quality protein your body needs to heal and maintain muscle.
For bypass patients, washing food quickly into the small intestine can trigger "Dumping Syndrome" that leads to nausea, dizziness, and extreme discomfort.
Stop drinking 30 minutes before you eat, and wait 30 minutes after you finish your meal before taking a sip.
Itโs a small habit change that protects your surgical results and ensures you feel full, satisfied, and energized.
