UROCON 2025

The UROCON 2025 conference was held at the prestigious Pearl Continental (PC) Hotel in Lahore from November 6 to 8, 2025. The conference brought together leading experts, medical professionals, and researchers from across the country to discuss the latest advancements, innovations, and research in the fields of urology and transplant surgery.

The Department of Urology & Transplant Surgery of PAF Hospital Islamabad played a significant role in the event, participating under the distinguished leadership of Prof. Saeed Akhter, Chairman of the Department of Urology & Transplant Surgery at PAF Hospital Islamabad, President of the Pakistan Kidney Institute (PKI), and Chairman of the Board of Governors (BOG) of PKLI & JMCRC including Dr. Muhammad Imran Jamil Consultant Urologist & Transplant Surgery PAF Hospital Islamabad, Dr. Durre Shohab Consultant Urologist & Transplant Surgery PAF Hospital Islamabad, Dr. Sadiqa Hassan Assistant Consultant Urologist and other post graduate residents. Prof. Saeed Akhter has been a trailblazer in urology and transplant surgery in Pakistan, and his contributions to the field were further emphasized during his presentation at the conference.

One of the most significant presentations at UROCON 2025 was delivered by Prof. Saeed Akhter, who discussed the crucial role of the Multidisciplinary Team (MDT) in managing complex urological cases, particularly in tertiary care hospitals. Prof. Akhter emphasized that in the current era of advanced medical practices, no single healthcare professional can effectively treat intricate cases in isolation. The MDT approach, which involves collaboration between specialists from various disciplines—such as urology, nephrology, oncology, radiology, and anaesthesiology—is essential for comprehensive patient care, especially in high-risk surgeries.

In his presentation, Prof. Saeed Akhter showcased three complex surgical cases that were successfully managed by his team at PAF Hospital Islamabad earlier this year. These cases were notable not only for their complexity but also for the collaborative effort of a dedicated multidisciplinary team working together to ensure optimal outcomes for the patients. The cases highlighted the importance of teamwork, communication, and expertise in achieving successful surgical and post-operative results.

The conference featured various presentations from talented residents and young professionals. One of the standout presentations was by Dr. Husnain Hamza Tariq, a distinguished resident at PAF Hospital Islamabad, delivered a presentation on the surgical and anaesthetic challenges associated with the management of a huge right Pheochromocytomas.

Pheochromocytomas are rare adrenal gland tumours that can cause significant morbidity if not diagnosed and managed appropriately. Dr. Hasnain Hamza Tariq’s presentation provided an in-depth analysis of the clinical approach to such cases, highlighting the critical role of preoperative preparation, anaesthesia management, and surgical techniques to ensure a successful outcome. His work demonstrated the high level of clinical acumen required to handle such complex cases in a multidisciplinary setting.

Dr. Muhammad Saleem Khan, a Post Graduate Resident in Urology at PAF Hospital Islamabad addressed the factors affecting recurrent urinary tract infections (UTIs) in postmenopausal women, a topic that has gained considerable attention in recent years due to the increasing prevalence of UTIs in this demographic. His address provided valuable insights into the physiological and anatomical changes that contribute to recurrent UTIs, as well as potential preventive and therapeutic strategies.

Dr. Muhammad Saleem Khan was also awarded the Best Poster Presentation Award. His recognition at such a prestigious platform is a testament to the quality of research being conducted at PAF Hospital Islamabad.

Dr. Danish Gul also a Post Graduate Resident at PAF Hospital Islamabad. Presented on Ascaris Lumbricoides in Augmented Urinary Bladder. Dr. Danish Gul presented a case report on the rare occurrence of Ascaris Lumbricoides in an augmented urinary bladder, accompanied by a comprehensive review of the relevant literature. His presentation shed light on this unusual complication, which can be a source of significant diagnostic and therapeutic challenges. Dr. Danish Gul’s work demonstrated the depth of knowledge and critical thinking skills required to identify and manage such rare and complex conditions effectively.

Dr. Danish Gul was also awarded the Best Poster Presentation Award at UROCON 2025, further cementing the reputation of PAF Hospital Islamabad as a leading centre for urological research and education in Pakistan.

The participation of the Department of Urology & Transplant Surgery from PAF Hospital Islamabad at UROCON 2025 was not only a proud moment for the institution but also a reflection of the continuous commitment to advancing the field of Urology and transplant surgery in Pakistan. Through the leadership of Prof. Saeed Akhter the conference underscored the importance of collaborative care, research innovation, and the dedication of medical professionals in tackling the most complex urological conditions.

The successful participation of the Urology Team of PAF Hospital Islamabad in UROCON 2025 is a testament to their continued contribution to the growth and development of Urological sciences in Pakistan and their ongoing efforts to provide exceptional patient care through cutting-edge research and teamwork.

Prof. Saeed Akhter, President of the Pakistan Kidney Institute and Chairman of the Board of Governors (BoG) of both the Pakistan Kidney and Liver Institute & Research Centre (PKLI&RC) and the Jinnah Medical Complex & Research Centre, proudly presented a research paper on behalf of PKLI at the prestigious International Pediatric Transplant Association (IPTA) conference held in Berlin, Germany.

During his presentation, 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐟. 𝐒𝐚𝐞𝐞𝐝 𝐀𝐤𝐡𝐭𝐞𝐫 introduced the Pakistan Kidney and Liver Institute (PKLI) as a rapidly emerging center of excellence in the field of organ transplantation and research. He emphasized PKLI’s commitment to maintaining high-quality clinical and research data and invited international healthcare organizations and researchers to collaborate with the Institute. He positioned PKLI as a global player capable of contributing meaningfully to advancements in Pediatric transplantation and healthcare at large.

Reflecting on his participation at the IPTA meeting, 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐟. 𝐒𝐚𝐞𝐞𝐝 𝐀𝐤𝐡𝐭𝐞𝐫 noted that it was a deeply rewarding experience, marked by reconnecting with longstanding colleagues and friends. He conveyed his pride in the progress PKLI has made, stating, “I feel very strongly that PKLI possesses data that is more robust and better maintained than that of many leading Western institutions.”

𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐟. 𝐒𝐚𝐞𝐞𝐝 𝐀𝐤𝐡𝐭𝐞𝐫 further underscored that the foundation of PKLI was not only to provide high-quality, high-volume clinical care, but also to establish Pakistan’s presence on the global map through impactful research. “Research is the most powerful tool we have to restore Pakistan’s dignity and showcase our capabilities on the international stage,” he asserted.

In his concluding remarks, 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐟. 𝐒𝐚𝐞𝐞𝐝 𝐀𝐤𝐡𝐭𝐞𝐫 made a strong call to action to healthcare institutions: “It is no longer enough to simply perform a large number of high-quality procedures. Institutions must actively capture, analyze, and present their data at international forums. That is the only way to truly contribute to global medical knowledge.”

He urged institutions to institutionalize research and data reporting as core components of their healthcare delivery, advocating for a cultural shift where evidence generation becomes the “official language” of progress.

PKLI’s participation at IPTA 2025 marks a significant milestone in its journey toward becoming a globally recognized center for excellence in transplantation and research.
