A new study shows that microplastics can intensify Alzheimer related symptoms in specially bred mice. Researchers exposed animals engineered for memory decline to plastic particles resembling those found in food water and air. New research shows how mammalian cells prevent harmful mutations from building up in mitochondrial DNA as it passes from mother to child. Unlike nuclear DNA, which mixes contributions from both parents, mitochondrial DNA comes only from the mother and accumulates mutations more quickly. Over many generations this could threaten cell function unless a protective system keeps the genome clean. Scientists have now mapped how two processes work together. A natural bottleneck limits how many mitochondrial DNA copies are passed to offspring while purifying selection removes defective versions during egg development. Fewer copies mean more variation, which allows faulty molecules to be identified and eliminated more efficiently.

In mouse studies researchers found that when only a small number of mitochondrial DNA copies were transmitted, harmful mutations were less likely to persist. When this bottleneck was expanded or when cells lost the ability to recycle damaged mitochondria, defective DNA accumulated and overall quality declined. These results reveal that mitochondrial turnover and selection operate hand in hand. The smaller the bottleneck, the easier it is for cells to filter out mutations before transmission.

This work provides a clear explanation for how mitochondrial inheritance remains stable over evolutionary time. It also offers insight into conditions linked to mitochondrial DNA instability including metabolic disorders, neurodegeneration and aging. Understanding these control steps may eventually guide strategies to maintain healthier mitochondria in disease.

Researchers have been exploring whether probiotics — beneficial bacteria found in foods and supplements — can influence body weight and the way we store fat. Some evidence suggests that having a diverse and balanced gut community is linked with leaner body profiles. Several small studies have looked at people taking specific probiotic strains while tracking their weight and body composition. In some cases participants experienced modest reductions in body fat or waist circumference compared with those who did not take probiotics. These effects are thought to arise partly because beneficial bacteria can reduce low grade inflammation in the gut that is linked with weight gain and metabolic dysfunction. They may also help the body extract energy from food more efficiently or influence how fat cells respond to insulin.

However the results are not consistent across all strains or all people. Probiotics are unlikely to cause dramatic weight loss on their own, but when combined with healthy eating and regular activity they could support a more balanced gut environment that favors better metabolic outcomes.

A new study suggests that prolonged exposure to one particular scent may lead to measurable increases in gray matter volume in specific parts of the brain. Researchers from Japanese institutions asked a group of adult women to wear a rose scented oil on their clothing every day for one month, while another group used plain water as a control. Magnetic resonance imaging scans taken before and after the month showed that those exposed to the rose fragrance had increases in gray matter in the posterior cingulate cortex a region linked with memory association and cognitive integration compared with the control group. This is one of the first studies to show that continuous scent inhalation can change the physical structure of the human brain.

The changes were not uniform across all brain areas. Regions related to emotion processing and simple odor detection did not show significant differences between the groups suggesting that the scent’s effects were specific rather than global. The authors propose that repeated stimulation of memory linked circuits may engage the brain in ways that promote structural adaptation rather than just short-lived activity changes.

While increases in gray matter are not the same as improvements in thinking ability the findings raise intriguing possibilities for low cost sensory stimulation strategies. Future studies with larger and more diverse participants will be needed to confirm these early results and explore potential links with age related conditions where gray matter loss is a hallmark.
