Mastitis is more than “just breast pain” — it’s an inflammatory condition that deserves early attention.
Mastitis commonly occurs in breastfeeding mothers due to milk stasis (blocked ducts), ni**le trauma, or bacterial entry. Early management can often prevent progression to infection requiring antibiotics.
✨ Evidence-based ways to manage early mastitis:
🔹 Frequent & effective milk removal
Continue breastfeeding or expressing milk. Emptying the breast is key to reducing inflammation.
🔹 Optimize latch & positioning
Poor latch can lead to milk stasis and ni**le damage — addressing this early reduces recurrence.
🔹 Gentle breast care (not aggressive massage)
Use light lymphatic drainage techniques instead of deep pressure, which may worsen inflammation.
🔹 Cold compresses
Help reduce swelling and pain. (Warm compresses may be used briefly before feeds if needed for let-down.)
🔹 Anti-inflammatory support
Ibuprofen (if medically appropriate) can help reduce pain and inflammation.
🔹 Adequate rest & hydration
Your immune system needs support — don’t ignore systemic symptoms.
💬 Remember: Mastitis is not a reason to stop breastfeeding — in fact, continued feeding is part of the treatment.
