🌟 Stakeholders of the Month | August 2026 🌟

At PSWC, being a stakeholder is not about age. Whether very young or adolescent, what matters is the willingness to participate, support others, take responsibility, and contribute to the Stakeholding Program.

This month, we are proud to recognise:

👏 Saqib
👏 Umm-e-Hania
👏 Usman

They have stepped forward to take responsibility, support the program, and contribute to the PSWC space.

At PSWC, participants support, learn, and grow together. Every young person has the opportunity to move beyond being a participant and become someone who contributes to making the space better for others.

Congratulations to our August Stakeholders of the Month!

Nature-based interactions are more than recreation for adolescents living with Thalassaemia Major, they can serve as meaningful psychosocial and developmental experiences.

Living with a chronic illness involves repeated treatment, prolonged IV chelation, treatment-related stress, restricted routines, and reduced opportunities for social participation. Structured experiences in nature can provide multisensory stimulation, attentional restoration, physical movement, peer connection, and opportunities for mindfulness and emotional regulation.

Within our Nature-Based Extension Programme, adolescents engage in sensory exploration, mindful observation, movement, reflection, and shared experiences. These activities are designed to strengthen self-awareness, adaptive coping, social-emotional competencies, resilience, and psychological wellbeing, capacities that are particularly important for young people navigating lifelong treatment.
Nature-based interactions can therefore complement clinical care by creating developmentally responsive environments that support the whole adolescent, not only the management of disease.

Children and adolescents living with Thalassaemia Major can benefit from opportunities that support their emotional and social development alongside their medical care. At the Kashif Iqbal Thalassaemia Care Centre (KITCC) Psycho Social Well Being Center - KITCC, our SELM (Social-Emotional Learning and Mindfulness) component is integrated into care through age-appropriate activities such as movement, mindfulness and body-awareness exercises. These sessions provide opportunities to practise attention, self-awareness, emotional regulation and positive social interaction in a supportive environment. For children living with a chronic health condition, creating space for these skills is an important part of supporting overall psychosocial wellbeing and quality of life. At KITCC, we are working towards an approach to care that recognises the child's medical, psychological, social and developmental needs together.

A beautiful moment of pride as Nida’s mother presents her with her Fellowship Certificate at the Psycho Social Well Being Center - KITCC , Kashif Iqbal Thalassaemia Care Centre (KITCC), marking the successful completion of her three-month fellowship.

Throughout her fellowship, Nida demonstrated commitment, confidence and a genuine willingness to learn and grow. Her journey is a powerful reminder that Thalassaemia Major does not have to define a young person’s potential or limit their aspirations. With appropriate medical care, psychosocial support, opportunities and an enabling environment, young people living with thalassaemia can learn, contribute, lead and succeed.

Seeing Nida’s mother present her certificate made this achievement even more meaningful. Congratulations, Nida, we are proud of how far you have come and excited to see where you go next.

Celebrating Growth, Learning & Contribution ✨✨✨

We are pleased to celebrate the successful completion of Nida’s three-month Fellowship at the Psychosocial Wellbeing Center, Kashif Iqbal Thalassaemia Care Centre.

Over these three months, Nida has shown remarkable commitment, warmth and willingness to learn. From engaging with children and adolescents to participating in psychosocial wellbeing activities and supporting our programmes, she gradually moved from learning through observation to taking greater responsibility and contributing with confidence. Her journey has been a reminder that a fellowship is not only about what one gives to a programme, but also about how much one grows through meaningful experiences, relationships and reflection.

We are proud of the progress Nida has made and grateful for the energy and care she brought to the Psychosocial Wellbeing Center. We wish her continued growth and success as she carries these experiences forward. 🌱

The second cohort of our Skill Development Programme has now begun at the Psychosocial Wellbeing Center Kashif Iqbal Thalassaemia Care Centre (KITCC) , with a two-month jewellery-making programme for adolescents living with Thalassaemia Major.
This initiative reflects our commitment to integrating psychosocial wellbeing with clinical care by transforming periods of IV chelation and waiting before blood transfusion into meaningful opportunities for learning, creativity and personal development. Rather than allowing long treatment hours to become periods of passive waiting or excessive cellphone use, adolescents are engaged in structured, hands-on skill development that promotes sustained attention, creativity, fine-motor coordination, problem-solving, social interaction and self-efficacy.
Importantly, the programme goes beyond teaching a craft; it introduces young people to the possibility of skill-based livelihoods, entrepreneurship and economic participation, while strengthening their sense of competence and identity beyond their illness.
For adolescents living with a chronic condition, care must extend beyond disease management to include development, agency, confidence and future possibilities.
This is the essence of the Integrated Developmental Psychosocial Care Continuum (IDPCC) Model, integrating clinical treatment with psychosocial wellbeing and human development. Over the next two months, we hope to see not only beautiful pieces of jewellery being created, but also skills, confidence, connections and possibilities taking shape. Because treatment may sustain life, but meaningful care must also help young people build a life of purpose and possibility.

The most powerful connections are built through play.

Through our Make the Connection Program, our Fellows create safe, responsive, and meaningful interactions with young children during their visits to Kashif Iqbal Thalassaemia Care Centre (KITCC) for their blood transfusions. Simple activities like sensory play, building, and shared exploration stimulate early brain development while fostering trust, communication, emotional security, and social connection.

Research consistently shows that nurturing, responsive relationships are among the strongest predictors of healthy cognitive, emotional, and psychosocial development. Every moment of connection helps lay the foundation for lifelong learning and resilience.

At the Psychosocial Wellbeing Center (KITCC), we believe healing begins with human connection.
