• Gram-negative diplococci

🧫 Culture Medium: Thayer Martin
• Selective medium
• Used for culturing and primarily isolating pathogenic Neisseria bacteria, including Neisseria gonorrhoeae and Neisseria meningitidis, as the medium inhibits the growth of most other microorganisms.
• Neisseria gonorrhoeae colonies appears as small, grayish-white to colorless mucoid colonies.

⚠️ Clinical Importance:
• Causes Gonorrhea (STD)
• Women → Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID)
• Men → Epididymitis
• Can lead to infertility

🦠 Neisseria gonorrhoeae on Thayer Martin
This fastidious Gram-negative diplococcus grows well on Thayer Martin used for the selective isolation of pathogenic Neisseria from specimens with mixed flora of bacteria and fungi.

💡 Key Lab Point:
Neisseria gonorrhoeae and Neisseria meningitidis are aerobic, Gram-negative diplococci, which grow optimally in an environment with 2-10% CO2. These organisms are very fastidious and cultivate with oxidase positive colonies.

⚠️ It is the causative agent of gonorrhea, a common sexually transmitted infection that can lead to PID, epididymitis, and infertility if untreated.
