Charge Nurse BS-16 Interview Questions

06 October 2026

Solved Version | All Interview Questions | Section B

---

8. Gastrointestinal System, Liver & Fluid Balance

74. Why does edema occur?
Edema occurs when excess fluid accumulates in the interstitial tissues. Major causes include increased hydrostatic pressure, decreased plasma oncotic pressure, increased capillary permeability, lymphatic obstruction and sodium/water retention.

75. What is ascites?
Ascites is the abnormal accumulation of fluid in the peritoneal cavity. It is commonly associated with advanced liver disease and portal hypertension but may also occur in heart failure, malignancy and other conditions.

76. If the liver fails, can edema occur? Why?
Yes. Liver failure can reduce albumin synthesis, causing decreased plasma oncotic pressure and fluid movement into tissues. Portal hypertension and sodium/water retention can further contribute to edema and ascites.

9. NG Tube Feeding & Patient Care

77. How will you guide an attendant about NG-tube feeding?
I would first explain the procedure, feeding method and safety precautions. I would ensure that the patient's identity, tube position, prescribed feed and aspiration precautions are appropriately checked. An attendant should only perform feeding if they have been properly trained, instructed and authorized according to hospital policy.

78. Will you perform NG feeding yourself or ask the attendant?
As a nurse, I am responsible for ensuring safe patient care. If NG feeding requires nursing intervention, I would perform it myself or ensure that it is carried out by appropriately trained and authorized personnel according to hospital policy.

79. Can you rely on an attendant for feeding?
Not simply because I am busy or my shift is ending. Delegation must be appropriate, the attendant must be capable and properly instructed, and hospital policy must permit it. I would ensure patient safety and appropriate supervision.

80. Can you give tablets to an attendant and ask them to administer them after your shift?
No, not routinely. Medication administration should follow the prescription, patient identification and medication-safety principles. If medication is due after my shift, I would ensure proper handover to the incoming nurse rather than casually giving medication to an attendant.

I would assess the patient's general condition and monitor vital signs, hydration status, urine output, bleeding and warning signs. I would maintain appropriate fluid management, monitor laboratory parameters as indicated and use paracetamol for fever when appropriate. I would avoid aspirin and NSAIDs because of the risk of bleeding. Patients with severe dengue require urgent hospital management.

87. How will you manage diabetic foot?
I would assess the wound, circulation, sensation and signs of infection. I would maintain appropriate wound care, control blood glucose, offload pressure, treat infection when indicated, provide foot-care education and refer the patient to the appropriate multidisciplinary team.

The exact vaccine schedule should be quoted according to the current national or provincial EPI policy.

92. What is the EPI schedule?
The EPI schedule specifies which vaccines should be administered at particular ages, beginning at birth and continuing through infancy and childhood. I would remain calm and avoid creating further panic. I would quickly assess the situation, prioritize immediate safety, identify life-threatening problems, call for assistance, communicate clearly and follow the relevant emergency protocol.

99. How will you manage conflict with a colleague?
I would remain professional, listen to the other person's perspective, identify the cause of the conflict and communicate respectfully. I would focus on patient safety and professional responsibilities rather than personal differences. If the issue cannot be resolved, I would involve the appropriate senior person.

100. If you make a mistake during duty, what will you do?
First, I would ensure the patient's immediate safety. I would promptly inform the appropriate senior nurse or physician, report the incident through the proper system, document it accurately and participate in corrective measures. I would also identify the cause and take steps to prevent the mistake from happening again.

101. If you have to choose between saving a mother or a baby, whom will you choose?
I would not make an arbitrary choice based on personal preference. I would immediately call the appropriate obstetric and emergency team and follow established clinical protocols. I would prioritize the patient requiring the most immediate life-saving intervention while making every possible effort to protect both the mother and baby.

> Interview point: This is a very sensitive question. Avoid saying simply "mother" or "baby." Demonstrate clinical judgment, emergency prioritization and teamwork.

108. Why are hospital bedsheets usually white?
White makes stains, blood and contamination more visible, making cleanliness easier to monitor. It also provides a clean and standardized appearance. However, the actual color of hospital linens may vary according to institutional policy.

A strong interview format:

---

⭐ High-Yield Situational Questions

For PPSC Charge Nurse interviews, these questions deserve extra preparation because the panel can use them to assess your judgment rather than just your textbook knowledge:

1. Two emergency patients arrive simultaneously.

2. You make a medication error.

3. A patient's attendant becomes aggressive.

4. A doctor gives an unclear or potentially unsafe order.

5. A senior asks you to do something against hospital policy.

6. A patient suddenly becomes unconscious.

7. A blood transfusion reaction occurs.

8. A patient refuses treatment.

9. A colleague repeatedly makes medication errors.

10. You are posted to a remote district.

11. There is staff shortage in your ward.

12. A patient's condition deteriorates suddenly.

13. Two senior staff members give you conflicting instructions.

14. A patient complains about nursing care.

15. You notice a breach of infection-control precautions.

Best approach: In situational questions, structure your answer around patient safety → rapid assessment → prioritization → appropriate intervention → communication → escalation → documentation.
