7 years in pediatrics has taught me that the loudest advice isn't always the right advice. 🩺✨
There is so much 'old school' information out there that can actually be harmful. Let's clear the air with some medical facts every parent should know:
❌ Myth: Teething causes high-grade fever.
✅ Fact: Teething might cause a mild rise in temperature, but a high fever usually means an underlying infection. Don’t ignore it!
❌ Myth: 'Cold' foods (like ice cream or yogurt) cause a sore throat.
✅ Fact: Sore throats are caused by viruses or bacteria, not the temperature of the food. In fact, cold things can often soothe a painful throat!
❌ Myth: Antibiotics are needed for every cough and cold.
✅ Fact: Most childhood coughs are viral. Antibiotics don’t kill viruses—they only work for bacterial infections. Overusing them is dangerous!
❌ Myth: A child needs a bowel movement every single day.
✅ Fact: Every child is different. Some go 3 times a day, others once every 3 days. As long as the stool is soft and the child is comfortable, it’s usually normal.
❌ Myth: Rubbing alcohol on the skin helps bring down a fever.
✅ Fact: This is dangerous! Alcohol can be absorbed through the skin and cause toxicity. Use lukewarm water sponging instead.
❌ Myth: Walking barefoot causes a cold or the flu.
✅ Fact: Germs cause illness, not cold feet. While keeping warm is cozy, barefoot play won't make your child sick!
❌ Myth: You must 'starve a fever and feed a cold.'
✅ Fact: Children need hydration and nutrition regardless of the illness. Never restrict fluids when a child has a fever!
The goal is to raise healthy, happy kids based on science—not just stories. 🍎🩹
