Sensory Receptors and their functions.

Stimulus is any change in the external or internal environment of the body which evokes or is capable to evoke a response in body's sensory receptors.

We study Physiology of the nervous system under three headings. Sensory system, motor system and the central nervous system. Sensory system deals with sensations and motor system deals with movements. Sensations like touch, pain, temperature, vision and hearing are important for patients. Pain is the most important sensation as doctors are more often required to relieve pain. Increased body temperature is fever. Disturbances of any sensation brings the patients to doctor. Any abnormality of movements like tremors in Parkinson disease or loss of movements in hemiplegia are important for the patient. Disturbances of sleep, speech, memory and emotions are related to the central nervous system.
All these conditions bring the patients to doctor. So, doctors should have a sound knowledge of the Physiology of the nervous system because it helps them to understand, diagnose and treat these problems. It helps them to order specific investigations. It also helps them to monitor the progression or regression of disease processes, so helps them to monitor the effectiveness of their treatment.
