I am Dr. Nafeesa Riaz, currently pursuing my MPhil in Histopathology at Khyber Medical University (KMU). My journey at KMU has been both academically enriching and professionally transformative. The university has provided me with a strong foundation in diagnostic pathology, research methodology, and critical thinking, while the guidance of experienced faculty has significantly contributed to my professional development.
The rigorous training and supportive learning environment at KMU have equipped me with the knowledge, skills, and confidence required to excel in the field of histopathology. Alongside my academic journey, I have had the opportunity to further develop my professional experience at Rehman Medical Institute (RMI), one of the leading tertiary care hospitals in the region. My professional journey at RMI has allowed me to apply and enhance the knowledge gained through my studies, contributing to high-quality diagnostic services and patient care in a dynamic healthcare setting.
I remain grateful to KMU for providing a strong academic foundation and for playing a vital role in shaping my growth as a healthcare professional. The experiences and training I continue to receive are helping me progress toward my career goals and make meaningful contributions to the field of histopathology.

I am currently serving as a Medical Officer at Rehman Medical Institute (RMI) while pursuing my MPhil in Haematology at Institute of Pathology & Diagnostic Medicine (IPDM), Khyber Medical University (KMU).

Being selected to work at RMI has been an important step in my professional journey.
My education at KMU has strengthened my academic foundation, critical thinking, laboratory understanding, and clinical communication skills, all of which have helped me adapt and perform effectively in a tertiary care hospital setting.

A productive UK Public Health Laboratories Learning Exchange was held with the UK Health Security Agency, bringing together Heads of Provincial Public Health Reference Laboratories from Pakistan and a representative from NIH Islamabad.

The delegation visited Manchester University Hospitals and the UKHSA Headquarters in London, where they observed the UK’s systems for outbreak surveillance, laboratory coordination, and public health response.

While the Pakistani team learned from the UK’s established public health laboratory network, the UK colleagues also showed strong interest in Pakistan’s field experience during the COVID-19 response and recent Mpox preparedness and response activities.

The visit concluded with a shared commitment to build sustainable scientific collaboration between UK and Pakistani public health laboratories, with a focus on outbreak preparedness, genomic surveillance, laboratory quality systems, and workforce development.

We are delighted to share that **Shahzad Ahmad**, Lab Technologist at the Institute of Pathology & Diagnostic Medicine (IPDM), secured **1st Position** in the Poster Competition during the **2nd Annual Ophthalmic Genetics Seminar – “Integrating Genomics & Functional Genetics”** organized by Al-Shifa Trust Eye Hospital.

This remarkable achievement reflects dedication, scientific excellence, and commitment to advancing research and innovation in diagnostic and genetic sciences. Congratulations on this well-deserved success! 👏🎉

PHRL KMU, in collaboration with UKHSA and the Health Department KP, organized a two-day training workshop on “Sample Collection, Transportation and Processing for Mpox” to strengthen the Public Health Labs network across KP for Mpox testing and surveillance.

The training covered sample collection, handling, transportation, processing, results analysis, IPC, biosafety, and biosecurity practices for safe and effective diagnostic services.

Dr. Asif Bettani, Country Lead UKHSA, highlighted the importance of laboratory preparedness and collaborative public health response for emerging infections.
Prof. Dr. Yasar Yousafzai, Director PHRL KMU, emphasized capacity building and strengthening quality laboratory systems across the province.

Visit of Director Public Health-KP to PHRL-KMU

On 29 April 2026, Dr. Humera Seemab, Director Public Health DGHS KP, along with her team, made her first official visit to the Provincial Public Health Reference Laboratory (PHRL) at KMU.

Prof. Dr. Yasar Mehmood Yousafzai TI gave a detailed briefing on key sections/ departments of PHRL.

Dr. Seemab appreciated PHRL’s role in tackling notifiable diseases and praised its frontline contributions during COVID-19, Mpox, Dengue and CCHF outbreaks.
She also commended the Mobile Testing Lab for its rapid response during the Buner flood emergency.

A proud moment for PHRL-KMU and a strong step forward for public health collaboration in KP.
