Scientists have developed an experimental wearable patch capable of destroying 97 percent melanoma tumors without surgical removal, offering a glimpse into a future where certain cancers could be treated using non-invasive skin-applied devices.

According to the scientific journal ACS Nano, the flexible patch is built from laser-induced graphene embedded with copper oxide nanoparticles. When exposed to a low-power laser, the patch gently heats to about 42°C which safely releases copper ions directly into cancerous tissue.

These copper ions generate toxic oxidative stress inside tumor cells to kill them without harming the surrounding healthy skin. The system combines multiple treatment methods into a single wearable platform to work only at the targeted site.

In a surprising twist, those with a history of use actually showed a marginally smaller decrease in IQ points—approximately 1.3 points less—than their non-using counterparts, effectively questioning the notion that the drug inevitably impairs long-term mental acuity.

While the findings are striking, experts note that lifestyle factors and 'cognitive reserve' may play a significant role in these outcomes. The study revealed that cannabis users in this cohort often possessed higher baseline IQs and education levels, which are known to influence cognitive resilience. Crucially, the researchers discovered that neither the frequency of use nor the age at which an individual started using the substance significantly impacted their intelligence later in life. Although the study was limited to men and relied on self-reported data, it provides some of the most robust longitudinal evidence to date that past cannabis use does not inherently doom the aging brain to a faster decline.

A major medical breakthrough has been confirmed with the case of a 51-year-old man who has been cured of HIV following a stem cell transplant originally performed to treat leukaemia.

After undergoing intensive chemotherapy to destroy his existing immune cells, the patient received donor stem cells that rebuilt his immune system. Importantly, these donor cells were not fully HIV-resistant, challenging the long-held belief that only rare CCR5-mutated stem cells could eliminate the virus.

Although the man continued antiretroviral therapy for several years after the transplant, he later stopped treatment under medical supervision. Extensive testing showed no trace of HIV in his blood or body tissues, and he has now remained virus-free for more than seven years, long enough for doctors to consider him cured.

This case expands scientific understanding of how HIV can be eradicated and suggests that immune system replacement, combined with donor immune responses, may be sufficient to eliminate the virus. While stem cell transplants remain too risky for routine HIV treatment, this discovery provides vital insight that could guide the development of safer, more widely available cures in the future.

A new method called electromechanical reshaping (EMR) is showing promise as a safer and more affordable alternative to LASIK for correcting vision problems like nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. Instead of using lasers to remove tissue, EMR uses a small electric current to gently reshape the cornea, the clear front part of the eye.

The process works by applying a mild electric current to the cornea, which causes a chemical reaction that changes the pH of the tissue. This change softens the collagen fibers in the cornea, allowing them to be reshaped without cutting or removing any tissue. In animal studies, this technique has successfully flattened the cornea, improving vision.

One of the main advantages of EMR over LASIK is that it doesn't permanently weaken the cornea. LASIK involves cutting away tissue, which can reduce the cornea's strength and increase the risk of future eye problems. EMR, on the other hand, preserves the cornea's structure, making it a potentially safer option.

While EMR is still in the experimental stage and not yet available for human use, researchers are optimistic about its future.
