🌍🤝 The second consortium meeting of the ECHOO (Empowering European Health Consumers Through Higher Education on Placebo and Nocebo Effects) project recently took place at the Complutense University of Madrid

Representing our research group were Prof. Przemysław Bąbel and Dr. Elżbieta Anita Bajcar. Over two days, project partners worked on the next stages of the project, which aims to increase public understanding of placebo and nocebo effects and promote more informed communication between patients and healthcare professionals.

🎓🧠 Two successful PhD defenses!

Many congratulations to Helena Bieniek and Justyna Brączyk for successful PhD defenses, both completed under the supervision of Prof. Przemysław Bąbel.

Helena's research explored how reinforcement and punishment shape placebo hypoalgesia through operant conditioning („Operant Conditioning of Placebo Hypoalgesia: The Role of Reinforcement and Punishment in Pain Modulation”), while Justyna focused on open-label placebo effect („Open-Label Placebo in Pain: Learning Processes in Evoking and Enhancing Hypoalgesic Effects”).

We were also honored to welcome Prof. Luana Colloca from the University of Maryland School of Nursing, one of the reviewers of both dissertations, to our laboratory in Kraków.

Prof. Przemysław Bąbel participated in Roma Pain Days — an international conference bringing together pain researchers and clinicians from Europe and around the world.

During the meeting, he delivered a lecture titled “Placebo-nocebo in chronic pain patients” as part of the Meet-the-Expert session.

🚀 The kick-off meeting of the international project ECHOO – Empowering European Health Consumers Through Higher Education on Placebo and Nocebo Effects (2025–2028), funded by the European Union under the Erasmus+ Programme, took place at the Alma Mater Studiorum - Università di Bologna (project leader).

The consortium brings together partners from across Europe: Uniwersytet Jagielloński, KU Leuven, Complutense University of Madrid, Leiden University, the College of Family Physicians in Poland, RE2N srl, and the Local Health Authority of Romagna.

Representing our team were prof. Przemysław Bąbel (Principal Investigator), Elżbieta A. Bajcar, PhD (Investigator), and Marek Oleszczyk, MD, PhD (Project Manager & Quality Reviewer). The project aims to advance education about placebo and nocebo effects.
