A child is not speaking. The parents go to a speech therapist. They practice words, flashcards, sounds, and articulation exercises for months… yet speech still does not appear. Or a few isolated words appear without understanding, without dialogue, without real communication.
The problem is that speech is not simply a function of the tongue or lips. Speech is the result of how the brain works.
If a child has impaired sensory processing, problems with nervous system regulation, weak interhemispheric integration, motor planning difficulties, attention deficits, immature frontal lobes, proprioceptive dysfunction, or chronic overload of brainstem structures — a speech therapist may work perfectly and still achieve very limited results.
It is like trying to teach someone to type when there is no electricity in the house. The keyboard works. But the system does not start.
Very often parents hear: “he is just lazy,” “boys start speaking later,” or “wait until the age of five.” Then at 6–7 years old it becomes clear that the child cannot build sentences, understand complex speech, sustain attention, or learn normally.
Speech is the top of a massive neurophysiological pyramid. If the foundation is unstable, the top cannot be built.
That is why, in some cases, a child needs more than just speech therapy. They need comprehensive work: neurocorrection, sensory integration, body-based therapy, nervous system regulation, development of motor control, breathing, rhythm, interhemispheric connections — and only then can полноценный запуск речи truly occur.
Sometimes the problem is not that the child “does not want to speak.” The problem is that their nervous system is not yet capable of organizing this process.
And that is exactly why, for some children, speech appears not after endless repetition of words, but after proper work with the brain and body.
