We have been taught to associate a strong mint taste, and often a bit of a burn, with a mouthwash that is doing its job. The sensation may be convincing. It is not a measure of effectiveness.
Once you look beyond the immediate feeling of “fresh”, mouthwash becomes much more interesting. What is in the bottle? Why is it there? And what is the product actually meant to do?
Mouthwash cannot make up for rushed brushing or skipped interdental cleaning. Think of it as an optional addition to a good oral care routine, rather than the routine itself.
CPC is an antimicrobial ingredient used in oral care. Research suggests that CPC-containing mouthwashes can help reduce plaque and gingival inflammation when used alongside regular brushing.
LARO Active Mouth Rinse combines CPC, hydroxyapatite and xylitol in a formulation with no added ethanol. What interested us was not the idea of adding another “essential” to the bathroom shelf, but a more considered approach to something used every day.
Mouthwash is not something everyone needs. But if it has a place in your routine, it is worth knowing what that place is.
We look at mouthwash, CPC, alcohol-free formulations and when to use a rinse in the latest story in The Journal.
